My husband was laid off and we can not afford COBRA as we've used up our savings due to underemployment the past 9 months. I am a type 1 diabetic so need to get my prescriptions which out of pocket cost $200, $200, and $275. Any suggestions?

Try calling Will County Health Department. They should have a clinic that can help you. I use the Dupage County Health Department (I work in Dupage Co) to help my patients with medications quite often.

Try contacting maker of your supplies like Pzizer or whatever. I have heard sometimes they will give them to you for free, especially in your circumstances. HTH Good Luck!

Are you currently working p/t in nursing? Maybe find a nursing position with hours that allow you to not put your daughter in daycare, and then work enough hrs to get insurance.

If not try the government, and see if they can provide any help.

You probably qualify for Medicaid. My family had to go on Medicaid earlier this year. I have no co-pays for prescriptions or doctor appts. Go to your county office and or go online and print forms off and then make an appointment.

Here are a couple of ideas/websites:

1. Google up each pharmaceutical company that manufactures the medication you need help with and look for its patient assistance program. It might require abit of paperwork but could be beneficial.

2. www.needymeds.org

3. www.rxassist.org

Beware: There are alot of "services" out there that will do the leg work for you for a fee.

4. Talk with your doctor and/or office staff. Many times they can help with medications and supplies at least for a short while.

Good luck!

We were paying over $900 per month for cobra coverage. Just before I was ready to cancelled cuz we couldn't do it anymore the government stepped in and cut the cost for ALL Cobra premiums. We now pay $352 for both my husband and I per month. You may want to check into this through your last covered employer. Otherwise I suggest you talk to your doctor. Good luck.

Hi C., we are dealing with a similar issue now and someone just told me about this state program, not sure if you will qualify but worth looking at/applying for. Also there is one for kids http://www.chip.state.il.us/

We used to have my parents on the Illinois Circuit Breaker program for free/reduced priced medications. Not sure if that is just for elderly but worth looking at too. Good luck!
