Our family started the tradition of giving gifts of the heart. It's been such fun and no stress. We give the little ones things like a trip to the duck pond and a picnic, a special date to go to the movies, something simple. To the adults, we give a promise to babysitting time, a day of helping organize or do one of those chores that are overwhelming by yourself and fun with a group,or all the men pledge to do a home project some Saturday for all of the other men. My teenage son hates doing dishes, so his sister gave him 5 sponges to turn in through the year for 5 times that she would do the dishes. Another time, we got a stencil and drew out a basketball court on the driveway and painted it. The little kids give hugs, something they've drawn. Another child in the family thinks that she wants to learn to bace cakes, so we've arranged for a family friend to spend an afternoon with her making a special cake. My neice is teaching me to knit, so that will go on all year. The adults love special time as much as the kids do.
One of the best things we've started is the gift of "words." We have started writing letters to each other on major events telling how that person has impacted our lives. There are always lots of tears and laughter and the letters are kept forever. This year, we are gathering all of the nieces and nephews for a day of fishing, horseback riding, games. Our gift is to take family pics that day. We're not professional photographers but with digital cameras, we don't have to be. It's just taking the time to plan it and do it. It has really challenged our imaginations without hurting the budget.
Hope this helps...
