My brother was in an accident and broke a few bones (leg, shoulder, arm and hand), he fell off of a balcony while working. He lives 12 hours from me and I can't go to be with him (lack of funds), and I feel helpless so many miles away. I had thought of maybe sending him something, like a care package, but what could I send? I just thought of magazines (he's not a novel reader), what else? Or what else could I do from so far away? He has a couple of friends helping him. I just don't want him getting too depressed being laid up and on pain meds. Something to cheer him up :-) TIA!

What can I do next?

I love the netflix idea, if he has a kindle or e reader, get him credits. If not, go to the 1/2 price book store and load up on anything that looks interesting. I agree with 8kidsdad. When you are bored, you'll give anything a try. My husband (think car and hunting magazines only guy) got stuck on a flight with me. I had just finished 10 Quesitons (aka slumdog millionaire) and he picked it up and read it happily until the plane landed:) I was shockedLOL

He may not have been a novel reader before, but when you are on your back for hours and days, you look for anything to fight off the boredom. So an action novel that will keep his attention may be just the thing.

If he has a kindle or Ipad (I don't have either one so I may be misstating which one is for reading books) or one of those that plays dvd's.

Sign him up for netflix so he can watch what he wants.

Good luck to you and yours.

Magazines you know he'd like.

Have foods delivered like pizza, chinese food etc.

Phone calls would be nice.

Word search magazine if you think he'd do it.

DVD's of cool "guy" movies.

Sports package (peanuts, smoked almonds, trail mix, protein bars, bag of m&m's & a blanket w/of his fave
team).

Warm wool socks.

Magazines, puzzle books, and movies are good options for something to "do" while he can't do much.

Gift certificates to help with groceries or other necessities while he's out of work helps too.

Snacks (either homemade or store bought), magazines, popcorn, movies, CDs. A nice handwritten note saying how much you wish you were able to be there. Maybe a picture of yourself and/or your family in a frame. Set up a time when you can call or skype him.

I sent my good friend a care package. She moved to Chicago to go to medical school and she had just started her rotations. I sent her fun things like nail polish, magazines, nutella (which I know she loves), snacks I know she loves, tea. She was so cheered up by it.

I think just the jesture of you sending him something will cheer him up.

Snacks
Bottled drinks
Candy/gum
DVD's
iTunes gift card (if he has an Apple)
word puzzles
warm socks
blanket
pillowcase decorated by your kids

**Have your kids send him a handmade card or note each day. That would brighten my day!**

You could also call a few local restaurants that aren't too pricey and make arrangements to have a few meals delivered. Most places will let you pay with a credit card over the phone... pizza, subs, pasta, etc. That way he doesn't have to worry about feeding himself for a couple of days!

How about baking him some cookies or a cake? And frequent phone calls might help cheer him up.

What kinds of things is he interested in? Can you think of anything from your childhood that he would get a kick out of? Like, did he have a favorite superhero as a kid? If so, send him some comic books with that superhero in them.
Did he have a baseball collection? Send him a pack of baseball cards.
Did he always chew bubble gum? Send him a variety of bubble gum/chewing gums.
Did he like a particular candy? Send him a magazine using that candy as "packing".
Does he have any current hobbies? Choose magazines that or on that subject (hunting, sports, auto racing, woodworking, remodeling, whatever).

Gift cards to his favorite food places, so he doesn't have to cook....if you can afford that?

Ask HIM what HE wants right now and that you want to send him a little package. I hate nothing more than getting something useless to me that someone spent hard-earned money on....that they thought was a great idea.

Maybe a card to show him you care... Or maybe some CDs ... It's hard now a days to send ppl stuff without it being expensive... Everyone has fancy gadgets... You could also call him once a week to check on him...

When my husband's friend was laid up for a long time, they bought him pre-made food. I think it was a bucket of chicken from KFC or something. Others called a caterer and had food delivered. It depends on what you what to spend. Food though if probably the hardest thing to come by being he is with a lot of broken limbs, and his friends probably don't cook. My guess he is a bachelor, so any already cooked food is a huge plus. Good luck!
