Hi! If it were me and she didn't know any other little ones yet, I'd probably take her to Build-A-Bear and make a family party out of it. They love it! Have fun...
I need some advise. My daughter is going to turn one in a few weeks. We are new in the area, so we don't know anyone. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for her first birthday?

If she is outgoing and loves to Play, I would suggest taking the family to a place like ChuckECheese pizza (where they have a games area w/lots of other kids running around to play with, along with a short show) or Bullwinkles (where they have the games area, water fountain show and cartoons running continuously). I'm sure either place would sing happy b'day to her to make her feel special if you asked. Best of luck!
you know, i know it is easy to get carried away in the birthday hoopla (I certainly have in the past) but if you don't really know anyone, and family cannot travel to you, try having a birthday "all day celebration" with your husband and child! let that little angel wander around and do whatever it is that she wants to do! either make a small batch of cupcakes (and let her "help") or purchase some from the store to take to the local playground park, or even, gulp,Chuck e cheese. Don't put a lot of pressure on yourself, it just makes what should be a happy day stressful for everyone. (again, i speak from experience) i hope you and your family have a wonderful time regardless of what you decide- it'll be fine!
There is plant child in Cary that she might like:

She could enjoy some time there, then you all can go to dinner or something, and when you get home, you can give her her own cake. I've also heard that Marbles Museum is really great, even for the very little ones.
I would dress her up and go to a cute restaurant where they would give you balloons and you could get a cupcake. Bring a candle and sing to her and take a few pics, or do the same thing at home. I live near a Fudruckers, and that is a good place for kids. Chili's will bring her a free dessert, but the singing they do would scare her to death!
The biting- when she bites, grab her up, and in your worst voice, say, NO! Then take her and put her in a place where there is nothing, for about 2 min. She is a baby, switching her legs is a very old and mean tradition, biting back, teaches them that if you do it, then it should be ok for them to do it too.
Give her apiece of cake of her own... let her rip into it and get lots of pictures! I took my son to get 1st birthday pictures at portrait innovations. We took a small cake, a plastic tablecloth for him to sit on, and some balloons tied really low to the ground and they got some amazing shots of him eating it and getting super messy. Very adorable! There is a sample of it on their website. We had an elaborate party with lots of people, but it was a HUGE waste of money...especially when planning around nap times. With portraits, you can send them to family and no one will have missed out on the birthday!
For my daughters 1st birthday we just invited family over for cake and took pictures of her opening gifts.
My daughter's 1st party is this Saturday. We are doing a bubble blowing contest... which is basically just to blow those bubbles (I got one at Wal-Mart for $6 and the juice for $1). They do it for library story time and all the 3 and under kids love it. I figured for any older kids I'd do their own little time with the bubbles and have them count how many they can catch. I am also giving party favors of sidewalk chalk and letting kids draw pictures with some of mine on the street (cultisac) and driveway. We are eating mostly 'baby' food with chicken nuggets, steamed carrots, and watermellon. Oh, and of course mommy's favorite cookie cake...only $8 at Lowe's Foods.
Have fun and take lots of pictures! :)
