How about children's books written in Chinese? I did this for my cousin whose wife is from Korea. They seemed to appreciate it. I ordered them from Amazon.com.
Any ideas? This is for my friend who bought me a $100 swing when I got pregnant. Now his wife is pregnant and he's visiting from China. I'd like to get him something but a gift card just doesn't seem personal enough although I know it travels well. They don't lack money so i don't think they would love the gift card for the sake of the gift card if you know what I mean.
Any ideas? Thanks!!

I listed some of my all time favorite baby items specifically to travel or going around town...
Gerber Bowls: they come in like a set of 5 with lids and they are awesome for traveling snacks, dinner, purees, etc.! My kids are 3 and 5 and we still use them on a daily basis! The Gerber spoons are great too!
Munchkin divided "bowls": we used formula so we mostly used it for that, but it is a round container that has a swiveling lid and you can pour out the contents of one of the three sections individually. Loved it!
rubber placemat: you can suction it to the table and run it through the dishwasher too. It's great for restaurants.
travel high chair: I bought the basic FP model that was like orange and yellow. It was so easy to fold down and store, we took ours everywhere and it even went on the airplane as a carry on.
disposable diaper bags: made by Munchkin they are smelly to protect from other smells! They even have cute carrying/dispensing gadgets for them, mine was a duck. It's fairly small and fits in a diaper bag or large purse.
Robeez: okay these aren't necessarily for travel, but I loved Robeez! They are so cute and functional without being binding on their little feet. They do well to help keep socks on and when they begin crawling I liked them for feet protection. Plus they come in all kinds of fun colors and designs, even if you don't know the sex of the baby there are still fun ones!
Most of these things are little things but you could do a whole travel themed gift basket for them.
Baby spoon from Tiffany. Classic gift. Can be engraved at any time (they can take it back to any Tiffany once they have a name/initials for the baby).
Have you seen the cute personalized things they have at Red Envelope? Check this out: http://www.redenvelope.com/new-baby-gifts-rnbby?ref=HomeN...
I ordered some family/personalized wall art from them for Christmas, and have received so many compliments on it. People love personalized things, especially for their babies! You could always personalize with their last name, since the baby isn't born yet.
Robeez shoes and a Lug diaper bag.
Something personalized w name. Or books/clothes
You could make or have made a personalized baby book/calendar. I made one for each of my kids and have saved it for them. It's personal and travels relatively well.
Is their baby going to be a traveler too? If the baby has to travel frequently, I would get him one of the following:
the CARES seatbelt for the planes
a rolling bag for their car seat
On another note, if he has an iphone you could get him a GC for a custom iphone case. The website is called uncommon goods. you can upload a photo of the child which will make an iphone case. really cool and about $40
Toys R Us has really cute blankets and toys that I get embroidered with the baby's name. Granted you'd have to know the name. If you don't, I'd wait and send something
When is the baby due?
Do they have a name picked out yet?
If so, there are many personalized Christmas stockings, that you can get from Etsy, for example. It being handmade and real special.
And if this is their 1st baby... a "baby's 1st Christmas" type ornament is also nice.
And these things are small/light/easy to mail, or for him to carry back.
Do you have to give him the gift now?
Can you mail it?
Is he here already?
