he is "Gansta" oriented... well he isnt one but likes to act it. So I dont know what would be appropriate other than cash, to give him for his party. He was the one that wants a full family get together cause he misses everyone and I was just going to take him for dinner and get him a drink on my own, but now its a family affair, and I want to get him a nice gift but clueless as to what wouldnt be lame. I hate giving just cash cause its boring. Though I know its probably the best one.

What can I do next?

My nephew (artsy fartsy kind, not gangta - LOL) wanted cook books and supplies for his kitchen. He had just returned from studying in Paris and was moving into his own apartment off campus (he is at KCAI) and so we got him specialty tools, some nice bottles of wine and tools for enjoying the wine like opener, foil cutter, glasses, etc.

If he is on his own there might be some things he would want that are more house/home entertaining focused (by entertaining I mean party wear).

My daughter isn't "gangsta" but does love music of the hip hop/rap persuasion!! Some of her favorite gifts have been tickets to shows (even if I give the tickets and the shows are a way out) for artists both up and coming and huge already. I'm not sure about the opportunities in Minneapolis but I have a ton of options in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

My daughter also loves, loves her music on her iPod and computer - maybe an iTunes gift card?

I second the notion of iTunes gift cards--that is what we will be getting for all of our college-aged cousins this year.

I read your other question first and commented there.

I think it's cool your 21 year old nephew wants to spend time with the family! I have 2 - 23 year old nephews, a 21 year old and my son just turned 21 in August. Only my son wanted to get together with family.

It was a family joke, but when my son turned 21, we got him 21 different bottle openers! Trust me, it's harder than you think to find 21 unique openers. ;) He laughed and laughed. His roommates (also at the party) laughed and said they can never find one when they need one. Now they shouldn't have any excuse.

I know cash and gift cards are boring, but that is seriously what they want.
I think what I did was $50 when they turned 21. But I still send a card and $5 every year to the older boys. I told them that I hope they always look forward to the card and $5 from their 'crazy aunt!'

Maybe a gift card to his favorite restaurant with the stipulation it has to be used to take you.

The best thing you could do for him is not buy him that "drink"...it leads to no good.
