Some real food!!! Certainly they have to be sick of that hospital food! :)
a basket of yummy (and hopefully somewhat healthy!) goodies is a life saver.
I second Denise, but if he has any family at home (kids, wife, etc.) you could also do something for them. This might seem too impersonal, but my work has given money or gift cards for hospital parking for employees' families when they are hospitalized since it adds up so much. Guys like the flower gesture, too. :)
Magazines
Nothing too personal though, in case they have a Wife.
:)
Guys like potted plants too. If you think he will be there for a long time, and he has family who spends time at his bedside, you might find out if the hospital has decent food in the cafeteria and buy some gift meals for his family. That way when they are visiting and a meal comes along they can get what theyd like from the cafeteria and eat with him without spending their money. I did this for a family who could not afford to buy the food and were packing lunch everyday and struggling with the impending death of their M., and didnt want to leave her side. It meant the world to them. It took a lot of pressure off them to have packable stuff in their house everyday for weeks on end. M. pulled thru and is fine now and still thanks me for taking care of them while she couldnt.
I would suggest a soft blanket, magazines, books, or fuzzy socks. I was recently hospitalized and these things were given to me and appreciated.
Cookie Bouquet. That way you can reach out and eat them as you please. Feel free to put dessert cookies, brownies, breakfast cookies, etc on wrapped in colored cling wrap on sticks.
