Icy Hot and Breastfeeding?

Hard to believe I did it, but after suffering with muscle spasms in my neck and shoulder all day I finally broke down and applied some IcyHot, gosh does it feel good. But I read the package after I applied it and noticed the bit about pregnant and BF mothers consulting their dr's first. I'm wondering if I should be worried and about how long it'll take for this stuff to clear out of my system. Thanks for your help!

I would think using icy hot in moderation wouldn't harm
your milk supply but to be sure contact your pediatrician
or la leche league.org

Those warnings are usually on there for legal reasons rather than medical, and since it is just topical, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would try a hot compress, heating pad, wintergreen oil, or a simple shoulder rub from your significant other next time, though. Just to be safe.

Just about every OTC med will say "consult your doctor" and just about every OTC med is safe. They cannot do testing on pregnant and nursing women (unethical) so they cannot technically establish that it is safe-- but given the amount of women who have used these products (Tylenol for instance) we know that they are safe. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi S.,
Not sure what the halflife is, call the local pharmacist or contact your Pediatrician. Generally though, 24hours.
Try a massage and or a good chiropractor. there is a condition called "mother's back". I recommend Jenna who works for Dr. Hoffman here in town. Glad you read the ingredients.

S.,
Just about every medicine you buy over the counter will tell you to consult your doc before using if you are pregnant or nursing. This is the drug company's way releasing themselves from liability. As an Ob nurse, I can tell you that IcyHot, in moderation, is safe to use while breastfeeding. Most topical meds are okay because so little of the medicine will cross over into the breastmilk. Hope you feel better soon!

I doubt it is anything to worry about. But, if you want to be sure you can call either your local ER or poision control. ER can call poison control for advice and the facts or you can call yourself. I think it will be fine, they just dont want the babies to ingest it.
