I have an 18 month old boy, and I need feedback about bicycle baby seats, trailers and helmets. Any advice or preferences for
certain brands or safety tips? Is there a shop in the Austin that has a good supply of bicycling stuff for toddlers?
I miss the wind in my hair! Thanks! -Theresa

I have 2 year old twins who ride in the same type seat that Suzanna wrote about. They both love it and have been riding behind my husband and I, since they were 20 months or so. My boys are both big and I don't have trouble balancing the bike. My seat has the high back and also cradles around the child's arms for extra protection. I say go for it.

You should try the i-bert bicycle seat. It sits on the front of your bike so your child is more involved. We have a 23 month old who has been using since he was about 1. We absolutely love it! I don't know if you can buy it anywhere other than their website.

Hope this helps!

I have used several things. We started with the trailer and it worked well with the first child. My second child however just screamed when we put him in it. So we got a front mounted seat. I was to scared to put him in a seat behind me but in front I feel like I have more control if we fall. He loves it and willingly puts his helmet on to go for a bike ride. We got it for him when he was less than two. He is a large child and it is hard sometimes to get started but he is 2 1/2 now and we still use it. For the older child, the 5 year old, we got the trailer bike that he rides on. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/InStep-Pathfinder-Trail-A-Bike-Bicy...
He absolutely loves it. Good luck. I think you have to decide what you are comfortable with and what your child will be happy with. Test drive them first to see what you like. As far as helmets go if your child likes to bike he will willingly put the helmet on or he won't get to go.

I don't have advice but I am writing to give you credit! I put my son on a bicycle seat loaded to the back of my bike (I'm not very good on a bike never have been) we are talking 20 yrs ago, and when I stopped the bike fell over from the weight in the back! I'm sure that the seats were not the quality that they are now, and like I said I am "NO" cyclist, but do be aware that you have to remember that there is a weight on the back, that can throw your balance off. I wish you the best.. Happy Cycling!

We pull a Chariot behind our bikes. They are costly but worth the invest. Safe, the kids love it, etc. Look for a used one on Craigslist or Ebay.

Have fun!

I've been using a bike trailer with my little girl since she was 3 months old. For the 1st year I would strap the car seat in and her in that, and later her by herself. I got my trailer used off of Craigslist, and it seems perfect. I just try to use bike lanes as often as possible. My little girl is 19 months old now, and she refuses to wear a helmet. She cries when I put it on, so I dunno how to get around that one. I would love to start a baby/mama baby buggy bike club, and all of us meet and ride together!

I have a nice rear mount child seat that I have meant to post on Craigslist. I think it was from REI...I will photograph and post if you are interested.

We have an In Step trailer that stays hooked up to my husband's bike. It holds two children (so you would still be able to use it if you have another child). The kids are buckled in and they don't need to wear a helmet. There is a shield that block them from any dirt, etc. that may fly up from your bike. We really like it - all three of our kids enjoy it. Our son is 15 months old, so he always rides in it. Our girls are 3 and 6 and they take turns riding in the trailer or riding their own bikes. I hope this helps you out.

I didn't want my son far away from me and by himself in a trailer, nor did I want to store a trailer. I did lots of research before buying a seat. They have them up front (glad I didn't end up getting that one because he's so big now that he'd be blocking me). I opted for the traditional seat. I orginally got a cheap one from walmart and returned it after opening it. I talked with many people from bike stores and they said it is about the quality of the rack it sits on more than the seat itself. I ended up getting this copilot limo http://www.bicycletrailers.com/CoPilot-Limo.pro
I first got it when my son was just over 1. He is 2 1/2 and we still use it almost daily. I was nervouse at first, but practiced with gallon jugs in the seat instead of my son the first time.

I would go for a front mount, I have found it much easier to handle a wiggly giggly child at the center of the bike vs. in the back. There are three on this link http://www.amazon.com/tag/bike%20front-mounted%20baby%20seat

Best wishes!

I bought mine at Academy. They had two choices. I can't remember what brand it is, but it comes up pretty high on the sides by his head(instead of the traditional one that looks more like a table booster seat). My son is 2 1/2 and loves it. He also wears his helmet while riding. It will hold up to 40 lbs. It did take me awhile to put it together, but I'm mechanically challenged. But, once it is together, it's great. It also removes quite easily when not in use. (Yet, the base stays on - which is what takes so long to put together. The base just looks like a book carrier.) The seat is also padded. If you need me to, I will walk out and look for a brand name. Just send me a message.
