Hi J.
My son had a hole in his heart as well as an extra artery that was pumping too much blood into his heart and lungs which in turn were making them work twice as much as the average heart and lungs of a 7 year old normally would. We decided to get it done only because we were told that if my son went out for sports or such and his heart was overworked (hot day, sweating and running around) he could very well suffer a hear attack and die on the spot. Now at that time I had heard on the news of all the recent deaths of children and teenagers that were suddenly dropping like flies because of unknown causes, which after autopsies came back turned out they had just about the same conditions my son had, I made my choice. Plus He wanted to play soccer real bad and for some reason I had been avoiding signing him up even before I knew what was wrong. Gut feeling I guess. But if you feel the need to get a second opinion go for it, this is your child your talking about. We had our son's surgery a Loma Linda Children's Hospital here in Loma Linda,Ca they deal in mainly brain and heart stuff. Best care given to children that I've ever encountered.
It was the scariest thing I have ever been through and I have personally been under the knife 6 times myself but that day I would have traded anything to take his place on that table. Luckily he's now 12 yrs old and aside from seizures and asthma his heart is just fine and he enjoys playing soccer all year long.
It was a simple small cut in his inner thigh where a small tube went in and in that they sent in a coil of sorts and that was sent all the way up to his heart. That would block the hole and I was told grow with him so there wouldn't be any need for more surgeries best part its not all open heart like it used to be unless something goes wrong. Which God willing nothing will. They stay at the hospital overnight and can mostly go home the next day unless there is a fever or uncontrolled high blood pressure (which my son had). It is very simple.
I hope you make the right decision for your family.
I will keep you and your child in my prayers.
