I Think My 12 Month Old Is Having a Problem with Milk Help!

My 11 month old has had fevers, lethargic an clingy and cranky for several days now. funny, I just posted on facebook is there a new flu going around because my 8 year old just started with it too, and one of my friends said her baby had it last week. So you may have 2 different issues--a virus, and constipation and maybe rash related to milk. My daughter has had a rash too but I swear it is related to teething. I guess you will have to wait and see. Maybe give her the formula and then try milk slowly when all this clears.

My 21 month old also has a random fever right now with no other symptoms. I do wonder if something is going all around because I have heard this a few times. I also took her took her to the Dr and all clear elsewhere. I do not think that the issue with milk can cause a fever, but I can be totally wrong. So maybe it is two things at once, making for a tough times for your little one. Did you do the very slow transition from formula to milk? We had to do that w one of the kids...it took a while. Worst comes to worst you can have her tested for a milk allergy. We switched to soy though at one point and it was even worse. Ask the ped what you can do for constipation at that age. Our ped said mango juice. I think if the fever continues and she seems like she is in so much pain (and you don't think it's just from the constipation) maybe you want her abdomen checked so perhaps the sooner the better. To me it sounds like she is sick :( nothing worse than a sick baby!! Its hard to say if its milk-related; I think if I were you, I'd go back to formula assuming she takes it easily, let her get back to normal, and try milk again. If similar things happen, then you're probably onto something.

I did note that you mentioned that the doc said it could be a vaccine reaction, and then said she was acting "crazy;" I don't want to start a war here when this was not your question, but I'd just say watch that. I know families (I work with kids) who have told me stories about vaccine reactions that they didn't recognize at the time and wish they had paid more attention to in hindsight so I'd say don't let that fall too far to the back of your mind. I do not believe black or white that vaccines are evil or that vaccines are fault-free either; every system is different and I definitely think there are kids whose systems don't react well, so if I were you I'd just keep an eye on that.

It sounds more like she is sick or having a delayed reaction to the vaccines, except possibly for the rash around her rectum. My son has a severe milk allergy, so I am on a lot of allergy message boards and groups. I haven't heard of fever or feeling cool and clammy as a result of milk in the past.

All that said, I'd still switch to formula at least until you can talk to a doctor.

Milk can cause constipation, but the other symptoms don't sound milk related to me (though I am not a doctor).

If you just started the milk, I would go back to what you were doing before for 2 weeks to see if there is an improvement.

With my daughter, we had to use Soy formula because regular hurt her belly. When we tried to switch to whole milk we had to try 3 times. the first two times she developed a runny nose and congestion within the first 2 days.

According to my ped., during a high fever/rash episode with my daughter at 15m, a reaction to a vaccine can occur up to 2 weeks out.

My son had the same problem when he was a toddler. It sounds like she is lactose intolerant. Try giving her 'Acidophilous' milk. You should be able to find it in the diary section where other milk is found. Also try giving her yogurt with the good bacteria in it. My son to this day, he is in his 30's, is still lactose intolerant carries in his laptop case a bottle of Florify with him. Your baby girl will probably have a problem with ice cream too. So ask your pharmacist about Acidophilous. What I bought years ago came in a pill form we had to crush till he could take the actual pill. There might be on the market now a powder. Florify is something I get from a wellness company I coop with. It is in capsule form and many moms who use it for children, open the capsule and sprinkle on a childs food or mix it in their milk.

Does your doctor have an on-call nurse or answering service after hours? I would call them and let them know all the symptoms you are describing. At least they can tell you if your daughter needs to be seen at the ER tonight or give you some advice to help keep her comfortable until she can be seen at the office. It sounds like an allergy to me. I hope she feels better soon! Poor baby and poor mom!!
