I am worried that since my son has been on alot of antibiotics because of his allergies he may be affected by candidiasis, I looked up his symptoms and was given this word i could barely say! I don't know of any one who has ever had it, and when i mentioned it to his Dr. she practicaly laughed at me. I am makeing him an appointment @ childrens hospital but just would like some peace of mind in the meen time. He has reacuring ear infections alot, fevers and much more I feel like I am not being the best mom that i can be when i can't even keep my son healthy. I don't want to seem like a hypochondriac either!

What can I do next?

A yeast infection is just a skin affliction that is normal. It is actually just a fungus and many over the counter medicines work amazingly well. Try using lotrimin powder every time you change your son. It will help stop the reoccuring yeast infections. I am a licensed preschool teacher and have changed many diapers as well as have 3 children of my own. This is what my doctor recommended when I asked the exact same question about my own son. I tried and was very satisfied with the results!

My question to you is, has your son been on ANTIBIOTICS or ALLERGY MEDS. Theres'a difference. Antibiotics don't treat allergies. Those are for bacteria. The problem today, with having the internet so easily accessible, is that people often times self-diagnose. Yeast infection is NOT a big deal, lol. It's easily treated. So I can see why a doctor would laugh, even if it isn't the professional thing to do. A yeast infection isn't anything to take a child to the hospital for. You're likely to get the same reaction there, as well. Women get yeast infections all the time, no biggie. Even men do, though sometimes they don't realize it. And babies get thrush (yeast infection of the mouth). See how common it is? Don't worry so much. Take him to the dr's, have him checked out, and get treatment.

All 3 of my children have had a yeast infection after an antibiotic t some point. It actuallly is very common. To prevent it from happening in the future just be sure your son eats 2 containers of yogurt (the kind with active ingredients) like yoplait a day while he is on antibiotics. Good luck! Oh, btw, if your son is having recurring ear infections you probably need to visit an ENT for tubes in his ears. My youngest had to have them and it's very easy and she has not had an ear infection since!

What are the symptoms that are concerning you? Candidiasis (yeast infection) in a child usually presents as a whitish rash inside their mouth and is easily treated!!! I don't think that if that's what he has there is a need to take him to a Children's Hospital. If there are different symptoms, there may be cause for concern!!!

All of my children have had yeast infections in the past in one form or another because of antibiotic use. What I have found to work the best to prevent it, is that I give my kids yogurt. And when they are on an antibiotic i give them yogurt 3 times a day. Havent had a problem with yeast infections since I started it, and yogurt is much cheaper than trips to the doctor! Good Luck!

Hi N.,
Shame on your doctor for laughing at something so serious. There is little doubt if your son was on antibiotics that he does in fact have candidiasis - maybe even before the antibiotics. His ear infections, etc. can most likely be prevented by getting the yeast under control and building up his immune system - both very good things. If you would like more info., please don't hesitate to ask. Why are to takimg him to the hospital?

well the candidiasis is yeast infection...just like in your question...like any medical name it sounds really horrible...like haletosis meaning bad breath...my daughter had a couple yeast infections from being on different medicines because of her ears...there is nothing to worry about. even if your son catches a yeast infection, they only give you an antifungal cream and it goes away in a couple days. :) don't fret it's ok.
good luck
