I Really Don't Want to Pump Anymore

What do you feed a one year old baby after you run out of breast milk? My son is almost a year old, and I have been pumping breast milk since he was born. He never took to the breast. We tried several different lactation consultants (etc etc) with no luck, so I pumped instead and fed him with the bottle. This worked out fine since I had to go back to work anyway after 3 months. However, my job has never been conducive to me pumping. Sometimes I go for 12 hours without pumping at all. However, I usually work 3 really long days, then I have 4 days off. So, during the 4 days that I have off, I pump as much as I can to keep my supply up. This has been working. We haven't had any problems with supply. In fact, I've put a good amount of breast milk in the freezer, but for about a month now, I have been slacking off on the pumping. Consequently, my breast milk supply has diminished to the point where I don't make enough for him anymore. We have been supplimenting the fresh that I pump with the frozen in the freezer. The problem is that I am soooo tired of pumping. I really don't want to pump anymore, but what do I feed my baby after my frozen supply of breast milk runs out? You don't give formula to babies over 1 year do you? What about cow's milk? I know some people breast feed until their children are toddlers. I wish I could do that, but it is so exausting. He does eat solids, but he still gets the majority of his caloric intake from the milk. So what do I do after there is no more breast milk?

What can I do next?

I have 2 daughters - one who is just over 13 months. When we went to her one year appointment, the doctor said to introduce her to whole milk. I was pretty happy jack as I had no milk supply and had to buy formula. Man is that expensive!

I started out by putting a little milk with her formula and increasing the milk a little at a time. She has been drinking only milk for about a month.

L.,

My son's pediatrician recommended starting him on whole milk when he turned one, and I believe that's a fairly standard recommendation. It's best if you combine the whole milk and breast milk for a few days and gradually increase the amount of cow's milk/reduce the amount of breast milk in each bottle so your son has a chance to get used to the new taste.

First of all I think you are wonderful for pumping even though your son wouldn't nurse. You can give formula to babies over 1 year, there are even some formulas made for toddlers. My son is 15 months and he refuses to drink cows milk, so he still nurses and drinks formula. If you want to stop pumping, then you should. You did a wonderful thing for your son my giving him breastmilk for so long. Good Luck!

Congradulations for pumping for so long:) I am a mom of a 3 year old. I had good luck when I started substituting one bottle of whole milk per day. I did this until she sot use to the taste and texture. It will probably take a few tries before he takes to it, but after he does you can gradually increase the amount cows milk you give him. Have you thought about giving him Organic Whole Milk? It tends to have a few more calories and is overall better than non-organic.
