I Need to Wein My Baby from Breastfeeding to Bottle Feeding.

I need any and all advise in this area. I have 4 children, the oldest 3 all refused to nurse, so I pumped for them and they drank from the bottle. Now, my last son is refusing to take a bottle. He will drink from a bottle if I am not home or within his sight. It can be very fusterating at times.

I need to get back on my artharitis meds and need him to take a bottle. Any suggestions on how to get him to take a bottle from me??

Thanks,

C.

Hi C. - I'm K. !!! How cool to see your spelling which was my original spelling! My Mom and Dad changed it when they had twins Kevin and Kathy - guess they wanted to be consistent w/ the "k's". Anyway - I had similar problems with two of my four children - weaning is not easy especially when the baby won't take a bottle from you BUT at least he is taking a bottle from someone. Mine would not take one AT ALL! She was so connected to me and the breast feeding. Anyway - it may sound crazy, but, just have someone else feed himas often as possible as you wean. Your mate, a grandparent, a neighbor, whomever - slowly they will get used to it. I think there is an actual scent to Moms who are breastfeeding so when you are around it's both the physical connection as well as the scent of the breastmilk. I truly believe this. So, if he's getting fed with a bottle a few times daily, your milk is slowing down production, and he may just get used to it. Also, you didn't mention how old your baby is - could his diet be supplemented with solid food yet or is he too young? Once he is able to eat solids, that will help as well.
One more thought, has your doctor or his doctor said that you cannot be on these particular meds while nursing? Some meds are OK. Definitely ask about that. It may not be an issue after all! Good Luck.

I know this may sound harsh, but when he gets hungry enough he'll take it. We had a similar problem starting my kids on formula after I had been breastfeeding. The dr and lactation consultant both said, don't give in. Once the child is hungry enough, they'll eat.

Also, I'd try to make sure you don't smell like milk too. I know that sounds funny but I know sometimes when stopping nursing there are leaking issues. So spray on some fresh perfume or take a shower in addition to using the disposable nursing pads so he doesn't smell it anymore on you.

Hang in there! You will succeed!

I have two daughters and my first did not take a bottle until 4-5 months. I just kept trying with her everyday when she was not tired and in a good mood. My second did not take a bottle at all. I tried all the time with her and the stress for her and me was not worth it so I stopped trying to force it and now she is 7 months and taking a sippy cup. Maybe just skip the bottle and try a sippy cup. How old is he? If you are stressed he will sense that and it may make it worse. Good Luck!

well here is what you do...provide him with the milk that you think he will most likely drink 100%.....then when you give it to him in the bottle..u got to make him take it...dont push it in his mouth...lay him comfortable on your lap and make him take it...he will eventually get use to that routine and give in....if that dont work let me know but im pretty sure thats the best solution.
