I have no idea when I will be starting my job but until that happens who do I go to see for health insurance on my son? Medicaid? I have had private ins. in Mich so I don't know where to start here. Please. Please. Please Help, I'm always afraid something is going to happen to him and I don;t have a clue as to where to go. My husband is just becoming eligible for Ins. but it's going to be expensive. What should I go, Thanks M. E.

Go to www.chipmedicaid.com and it will give you all the info and you can even apply on-line. If he does not qualify for this, there are several clinics that are lower cost - People's Community clinic and the Seton community clinics (though they are often closed to new patients) and El Buen Samaritano clinic. Feel free to contact me for more information. I have worked in several of the low cost clinics over the years.

Texas has a central number #211 to call for all sorts of community support and information. You can also go online to www.211centraltexas.org
Hope this helps!

CHIP is awesome! It is for working families that cannot afford insurance. It has great coverage, medical, dental, vision, etc. The doctors are great too.

We do a child only policy through United Healthcare for our two daughters- really great insurance and the price isn't TOO bad... You might look into that...

Best of luck!

The low income children's healthcare program here in Texas is called CHIP. Depending on your husband's earnings, y'all may be over the income limits and need to purchase insurance on the open market. I would start with CHIP and ask if they have suggestions for private pay insurance for folks who don't qualify for CHIP, if that's where you end up.

If you are eligible but have trouble getting your eligibility confirmed - you should talk to folks at legal aid or the Center for Public Policy Priorities. There are all sorts of issues with people having long delays due to Texas eligibility system's really stinking it up. Still I thin CHIP covers more kids in TX than any other insurance program. If you are eligible for Medicaid (lower income guidelines than CHIP) - they should be able to figure that out in your application for CHIP also.

Depending on what city you are in, there may be local clinics that are reduced pay or free - El Paso is the best I believe in covering children. Austin has a clinic called the People's Community Clinic you could call. Other cities I don't know so well.

I second the comment about CHIP. You could call and see if there are social workers at Peoples Community Clinic or the Dell Children's Medical Center who may be able to direct you further. You may even be able to google CHIP (children's health insurance program) to get a little more info.
