I have a 13 month old that use to go poo every morning, and all of a sudden she stops. I don't know what i am doing different. I haven't changed any of her foods or even tried anything new in awhile. I gave her pear juice and prune/apple juice. I tried kyro she wouldn't even touch it. she hates any kids of milk so the only milk in take she gets is in her food,Yogurt, icecream. Last Thursday she was so miserable peds said do a glycerin suppositorie, and after a battle to get it in she kept it in i'd say 7-8 mins and went a wee lil bit.today was horrible so i called peds she said do another one and if nothing by tomorrow buy some mirlax. I am so upset i can't figure out what happened all of a sudden. She is getting plenty of fluids in.

What can I do next?

Hi, Go see a pediatric gastroenterologist as quickly as you can. My son has had "poo probs" since 4 mos, after the first 4 mos of bad colic, and miralax does the trick-- but the fact that this came on so suddenly would make e very worried.

good luck.

same thing happened with my daughter. After I got her to go with the glycerin supp. I had to continue with prune juice or prunes twice a day to keep her regular- and even then she would only go every 3-4 days and often it was uncomfy for her. Stay away from bananas and apple juice. warm prune juice works well, or try a mix of warm tea and gingerale. this too shall pass!!! at least it did for us!

Add more fiber to her diet. GRADUALLY. Try the whole grain pancakes. (depending on the amount of teeth she has) add more whole fruits such as apples, grapes, oranges, (only if she already has a tolerance for them) add broccoli (chopped works great at this age) cauliflower etc. And give her water to drink with her meals... ease up on cheese or cheese products and pasta or other white flour products... But please (and I am sure that you already know this) do not try all new foods at once.
Juices are okay but they are no substitute for the whole fruits and water -- well water is essential to us all...
Good luck and God Bless!

Don't panic. It's okay if she doesn't poo everyday at the same time. Try some yogurt. I recommend yoplait custard style for little ones. It comes in plenty of great flavors that kids love and it keeps everything moving along smoothly!! It is also great calcium if your daughter doesn't like to drink milk. Good luck!

This one is right up my alley. My daughter is now 9 and has been fighting constipation for about 5 years if not longer. I recommend that you take your child to a gastroenterologist that deals with children. This is something that your child might have to deal with for many years, as my child has. She is currently on Miralax and it works but not completely. She is also on Senekot twice a week to help with bowel movement. I also recommend that your dr. does an X-ray. This will show the amount of bowel in the intestines. This will tell them what they need to do for your child. This could be a lifetime thing for your child. There is no real reason that this happens in children but there is a solution. My child is doing well with using both of the medicines. I hope this help you but if you would like more information please let me know.

My son was regular too. He had surgery, and it caused him to become constipated. He had a tough time 1 or 2 times going. Since then, he holds it as long as he can. Well, he did anyway. After talking with the doc, she explained, it only takes one painful poop, to start holding it, which only makes it worse. He has been on Myralax for a few weeks. SO much better. He is 3, and the doc told me, it will take about 3 months of loose stools to get him back to a regular poop schedule. 3 months to retrain his brain, it doesn't hurt. Hope this helps. It's nothing you have done.

Just my 2 pennies. :-) Hope all works out well.

Hi I would mix jars of baby prunes in her yogurt. Little spoonful. How about wheat crackers, put alittle jelly. Graham crackers with some jelly and cream cheese. Give anything that has fiber. Hope it works out for you both. Have a good day. Hey I just remembered, apple juice sometimes is not good for constipation I was always told. I bet pear jars would be good. Get baby barley ceareal. Oatmeal works. Hang in there, I'm sure all will be ok.

H., I don't have any suggestions other than what you've already recieved, but I was just wondering if you had nursed you daughter and if so when you stopped? I noticed that about two weeks after I stopped nursing my son he started having some problems when he had also been very regular before that. I believe there is a laxative effect in breastmilk and the loss of that may be the difference that you are searching for. Maybe cut down on the amount of cheese which is binding and increase the yogurt to balance out the calcium need since she doesn't like milk. I am still trying to add fluids to my son's diet and more fruit, although he is not a fan of many fruits. Good luck and I hope you find someting that works for her.

I had the same problem with my little girl. I took her to the Peds because it became such a problem with her holding it. Get the Mirlax. That has helped. The doctor said around this age if they had one bad experience (like a hard bm) then they can decide I don't want to do that anymore.

Dear H.:

Did you give your baby girl vitamins with iron in it? Sometimes, the iron in the vitamins can make some people ( not everyone ) constipated.

It could be that her good bacteria may be depleted. This can happen simply by drinking chloinated water or taking an antibiotic. I recommened a good Probiotic to many people who are having bowl movement problems with a great deal of success. Try your local health food store. Yarecks in charleroi or Sunny Bridge in McMurray will be able to help you pick out a good one. Yogurt is not enough. She would have to eat a gallon to get a decent amount and there is too much sugar. Probiotics are supposed to be in your gut as part of you bodies immune system and to help you break down food. There are no side effects, it's totally natural and you should see results in only a few days.

You say you haven't changed foods or tried anything new in awhile, but what is awhile? Cut back on dairy (don't worry about calcium for now, or get more veggies with calcium into her)... add lots of fiber and fluids, try adding ground flax seed to oatmeal (1 tsp or so), stay away from bananas and apples for a bit. My son has some food intolerances and when something slips by and he gets constipated sometimes the only thing that works is the miralax (and sometimes too well). Does she seem uncomfortable? Make sure you are putting the supp far enough up. If it's not then it's very easy for them to push it out. Good luck.

i had to give my little girl a glycerin infant suppository before. it is difficult to place. but just hold it there with your finger and it will melt or stay in after a few minutes. my daughter always went shortly after so if yours isnt i would contact the dr and let them know. just to be on the safe side. make sure the suppository stays in though. if you are letting it go too quickly it will just pop right back out and she wont get the full benefit of it. hope your little girl is feeling better soon.

get some flax seed oil and put it in her food. she should not be able to to taste it. try some dried fruits also if she likes that. do not give her too much though as the sulfur in dried fruits can cause diarreah if she eats too much of it. as far as milk goes have you vanilla flavored soy? also try to have her lay her down with her legs folded try to do her legs in a circular motion to the right.rub her tummy too in a circular motion to the right to get the intentines to do something. my sister in law had a hard time with my niece pooping when she was younger.

I had the same problem when my daughter was little. I started giving her a little prune juice every morning and the problem soon resolved. It has to become a habit, though; be persistent and regular with the prune juice and the body gets used to it and uses it to prompt movements.

A friend of mine has irritable bowel syndrome. Both of her daughters have problems with their bowels. Their problems didn't start until after they turned a year old. It could be a lot of different things including a food allergy (some of my allergies as a child affected my stomache and bowels). Don't blame yourself. Try to watch what she is eating to see if it is worse when she eats certain foods. Also, get the miralax it really does help. My friend had to use it for both of her daughters. She used to hide it in her daughter's juice. Both of her daughters had problems with cows milk, also.

Also, try to make sure she is getting plenty of fluid mainly in the form of water. Even if you have to get some Propel flavored water or similar product. The extra fluid can help to make her bowel movements easier to pass.

The most important thing is to try to make her comfortable. When she is trying to pass the movement, try holding her (if she isn't potty trained) so that the poo is not pressing against her and making it harder to get out. Also, rubbing her back always helped with my friend's little girl. (I used to babysit her while her mom was going to school.)

Good luck with you little one.

I put flaxseed meal in my son's oatmeal everyday. He used to be really good at holding it in for days at a time. The flaxseed meal has kept him so regular, he hasn't had a problem in awhile. I had a hard time finding it, but finally found it at Wegman's. You get a 16oz bag for about $4 that lasts a long time. We're just starting our 4th bad since the fall and my son and I eat a tsp every morning. I'm 8mos pregnant with my 2nd and have Crohn's disease and I haven't had any of the constipation problems I had with my 1st pregnancy.

Hi H.,
I've had problems with constipatation with my breast fed 11 month old since birth. After changing his diet, (cutting out all binders - bananas, rice cereal, carrots, applesauce, peas, wheat and milk products) and working with a homeopathic practicioner, he now has regular bowel movements every morning! The doctor told me I needed to use mirlax, but I've been able to avoid using it so far with the changes I've made. If you're curious about homeopathy, please e-mail me, and I can send you my practicioner's phone number and rates. She does phone consultations, and you can buy homeopathy at Whole Foods. Good luck!
