I Need Sleep!

My son is 6 months old and has been sleeping through the night since he was born. Now he is getting his 2 top teeth (already has the bottom ones) and is NOT SLEEPING AT NIGHT! My husband and I are just exhausted! He has not slept for more than 2 hours at a crack for about 2weeks. Any suggestions on how to make him more comfortable so he can sleep? I have been giving him tylenol, teething rings and oral gel.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well thank you everyone for your suggestions...I went and bought the teething tablets and wow did they help! I gave him 2 tablets tonight and the crying stopped within a few minutes. I also tried the Ibuprofin which also seemed to make him feel a little better. It is a little after 8pm and he went to bed without any trouble..I didnt even have to rock him, just fed him a bottle and put him in his crib! Thanks again..so far so good!

I suggest you try teething pills made by Highland. You can get them at Walgreens, they come in a bottle and are usually hanging with the other baby stuff. Everyone I know that has tries them say they work like a charm. They worked on all three of my kids. Good luck.

I would check with your pediatrician about alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Tylenol never did much for my daughter but alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen usually worked.

have you tried the hyland's teething tablets? there's another brand whose name i forget that are just as effective. you should be able to find these at walgreen's in the baby section, or any other major store. they're homeopathic, so all natural, and i was really amazed at how much relief they were able to provide my son when he was having a really bad time.

As a mothere of 4, a 5 1/2 yo now and 3 1/2 yo triplets, sleep was always a hurdle for us. With all four of my children, everytime they were teething, they inevidably got a runny nose. With that, comes a lot of drainage and that caused them to get ear infections. I don't know if you've had a diagnosed ear infection yet, but with that comes sleepless nights, crancky diaper changes, poor eating, and just plain unhappy and uncomfortable kids. I would rule out the ear infection, and then move on to alternating Tylenol with Motrin every 3 1/2 - 4 hours. Good luck.

HYLANDS TEETHING TABS! I heard about them from Kelly Rippa-before I even had kids, we were trying though. She was so impressed with them, I actually wrote the name down for future use. They work so well, I've used them with both of my girls and wouldn't live without them. If your baby isn't sleeping because of pain, it'll relax him enough to let him (and you get some sleep). You can find them in Wal-mart usually somewhere by the vitamins or at Walgreens in with all the other baby creams and meds. Here's hoping for some sleep for you!

I'm dealing with the exact samething with my 6 month old, although she has yet to sleep through the night. She was down to one waking a night. She got an ear infection last week and some new teeth and she's been getting up every hour to two hours since it all started. Thanks for asking the question. I share in your suffering. I'm getting about 4 hrs of broken sleep a night and going to work full time.

I hope our babies find some comfort soon and we all get some sleep.

I feel your exhaustion. I have a little one who had troubles when she cut her first 2 teeth. I used Motrin and Tylenol... Motrin first then 4 hours later, give him tylenol, then 4 hours later, motrin again.
Check with your doctor and get his ears checked. I thought that my daughter had an ear infection so I would check that first. It will help you to know, kind of mark off whats not wrong.
Then I used, and still use, ear drops. The brand I use is Auro Earache Relief Ear Drops. I put them in her ears 1-2 times a day. It helps with the pain of teething. My doctor told me it was fine and a good idea also. It helps with the wax build up.
You may want to also think about stomach problems. My daughter became allergic to the Cow's Milk Protein and we had to change formula to NUTRAMIGIN; made by Enfamil.
If you are breast feeding, try changing your diet. No milk or dairy products.
My best of wishes to you and I hope you get some sleep soon. I hope this helps and you can once again enjoy your little boy. Sleep soon...I hope!!

All great advice so far!
Did you know that our children, even babies pick up on our emotional distress and our stress? This could also be what is causing him to fuss. Yes, I may be new agey but I also am majoring in Education and just finished a child development class, so its fresh in my mind. lol. Try to be as calm as possible when holding your son, no matter how much stress you are under from lack of sleep. Projecting a sence of calm may help him feel better.

And right on for massaging gums! That really helped my daughter.

The biggest thing about teething is time. It will run its course and all you can do is ride it out if nothing seems to work. Just like many moments in our children's early growth stages, they are gone so fast or they take so long to get through!

The only thing that ever worked with my kids were these homeopathic teething tablets. I think they are available at Target now. They dissolve on the tongue, you can't overdose on them and they worked to alleviate the pain and swelling. you mentioned giving tylenol, but you could also give ibuprofen which reduces the swelling as well as the pain. Then remember that this won't last forever -take naps if you can during the day, go to bed early and let the housework, the laundry, and the social life go at this point if you can.

Hi N.,
I wonder if the tylenol is just not enough, have you tried to give him Ibuprofen along with the tylenol? Your pediatrician can tell you the correct dosage.

Good luck and hope this helps.

We have found Infant Motrin (Ibuprofen) to be much more effective and longer lasting than Tylenol. Also, I swear by Hylands Teething tablets. They are all natural and can be found at stores like Walgreens. Good luck!

All I can say is Motrin Motrin Motrin. Was a huge difference w/ my DD over Tylenol. Plus Tylenol only last 4 hrs so it can wear off during the night. Motrin is 8 hr so giving it before bedtime may take him much further. And don't buy the generic Ibuprofen - I tried that and it didn't work as good as the name brand Motrin.
Good luck! My DD (9 months) still gets up a minimum of 2x a night (down from 4-5 recently) so I feel your pain w/ the exaustion! Thankfully I stay at home w/ her - if I had to go to work I'd be at my wits end. I'll have to go back to work shortly and I know before that happens I will have to start really trying to get her to sleep though the night. When they are sick or having teething issues though theres sometimes not much you can do but comfort them. Try the Motrin though - it made a difference for us. DD was a much much happier girl.

My sympathies!

With my son tylenol didn't make a dent, but infant motrin was really effective- how much of this was actual pain relief and how much was exhaustion, I'm not sure. But we all got some sleep when we switched.

Also, my best friend used a vibrating teether with her daughter and swears by it. I witnessed the baby before and after with this teether and it really was dramatic. Had I known about these when my son was still teething, I'd have bought at least 2.

I've included a link to one, so you can see what I'm talking about. For what it's worth, I don't work for the store and am not pusing it (though it's one of my favorites).

Good luck!
