I Need Sewing Ideas!

We exchange names for Christmas on both sides of my family. Last year I had seen a cute hooded towel idea when I was doing some baby gifts and as of right now I've made or will have made almost 25! I loved the idea as I was able to make them for every kids' name that we got last year! The oldest grandkid is my step-daughter, who is now 15. One one side of the family there are 10 kids under the age of 5! On the other side we go from 15 to 12 to 11 on down to baby.

Does anyone have a cute/simple sewing idea that I could do and could go for either boy or girl? Or maybe something that is either boy specific or girl specific that won't take a ton of time or cost a lot?

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Tote bags. Simple and useful, you can make them as beach bags or overnight bags. You can use matching or contrasting fabric for outside pockets. I like a light colored fabric for lining, but I would also add pockets inside.

Quillow! The quilt that folds up into a pillow! I've never made one because, unlike you, I am NOT a wiz with sewing! BUT, I have friends that have made them and they seem relatively easy.

You can do a quick internet search and find out how to make them. Or I'm sure the library has a book with a pattern or instructions.

Good luck!!

just a draw string bag to keep stuff in, say big enough for a coloring book. flannel or cotton in what ever print they might like, You could mono gram if you are all fancy like that. Once you have a drawstring down you could make a back pack like thing just by adding cording.

I've always wanted to make custom pillow cases for the kids.

I've seen fancy ones that have a little handle like for sleep overs. but just the basic would be fun too.

a neck pillow for in the car.

edited I"ve been meaning to make a tote bag for my kids to take to the library with a little pocket big enough to hold thier library cards. tha tmight be neat

I make blankets out of fleece that has a pocket sewn on the end to fold it up into a pillow. I sort of follow my own pattern which I can explain but I bet I can find a tutorial online somewhere.

I've made these for so many nieces and nephews and friends. It's funny because I forget about them and then someone will be using it while I'm at their house or recently one was brought along when we went to see 4th of July Fireworks. They are great because you can make them as simple as you want and you can customize them for the recipient. I put a decorative stitch all the way around the outside.

Pillow Pets (I used to make these decades ago out of old flannel night shirts that were soft as wishes decades ago. LOL started with a "pillow person" because my pillowcase was in the wash and I use down pillows -aka pokey without a cover- and tied a flannel night shirt on). Using pillow blanks you can make catepillers, greek collumns, fish, etc. out of the collumn pillows, standard pillow pets out of square ones. But you don't really need the blanks. Just the cover themselves to put on their favorite pillow is awesome.

My daughter is 17 and last year for jv cheer they all got this special soft blanket with the mascot and their name embroided . It a favorite of all the girls.

Daughter is varsity now but that blanket stays on her bed and when they head our on the bus in the early am, etc. they all have the blanket with them.

They also received a smaller version of the gym bag with their name on it and it was a hit.
