Mommas,
I need your help/advice/support on how to increase my milk supply and breastfeed my baby successfully. I have a 3 week old baby and we wanted to exclusively breastfeed him but even while in the hospital we had to supplement because he was dehydrated and not getting enough milk. We then tried mainly breastfeed for another 2 week (with a bottle or 2 a day at the most) but when we took him in for for a 3rd lactation appointment (because of what we thought were latching issues) we found he was loosing a little weight and was basically just not getting enough food. We then went to mostly bottle feeding to get his weight back up and get him fed and at the same time I was trying to pump as much as possible. But my milk production is so low.... and I'm getting discouraged and feel a little bit like a failure. I so badly want to mainly breastfeed my baby but with only producing about 4-6 oz of milk a day right now... that is not happening. I just want to know what you other mommas have done. I'm trying to get enough rest (yeah right), eat well (when I have time), not stress too much (not doing too well on this), pump often as I can (how much do I need to?), etc. I'm taking Fenugreek 3x day... and drink a ton of water. I want to go get some Mother's Milk Tea too..... and I absolutely don't want to give up on this!

I'm a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist. I highly suggest finding an acupuncturist in your area who can help your body produce the milk that it CAN PRODUCE. When we're stressed it keeps our energy (Qi) from flowing smoothly. If your Qi isn't flowing smoothly, your body can't relax and let the milk flow. Also, when we have a baby, we donate a LOT of Qi to our baby. I would guess that you're pretty low in the Qi category as well, which will make it difficult to make enough milk. Don't give up, you CAN do it, you just need help in building the Qi to do so! Certainly don't beat yourself up about not being able to make enough milk right now. Supplement with formula as necessary, keep nursing as much as you can and in time, with enough Qi, it will flow.

Hi T., I'm sure you'll get lots of good advice but the one thing I can tell you is to eat lots of PROTEIN. This is what really helps your milk supply. Your body needs more calories now while breastfeeding than when you were pregnant. For some women it takes a ton of food eaten to produce a good amount of milk. I would eat a well balanced, protein rich diet and that should help, along with the fenugreek. I have heard that works really well. You can google it and see what else comes up to help build your milk supply. That's what I did. I hope your milk supply goes up. Just hang in there.

I pumped in addition to breastfeeding so I more milk than needed. also, I noticed you mentioned that you eat when you have time...I would recomend that you eat often and enough because food as well as water help keep your milk supply up. best of luck to you. be persistant...it helps! :)
