Hello! My name is S. and I am the proud mother of Jacob who is almost five and he is Autistc. I have been trying to potty train him for the last year and its going no where. I have tried paper targets, musical pottys, a spongebob potty seat, i even converted the downstairs bathroom to his needs with all sorts of things, like a sticker chart, rewards jar etc. And nothing is working! I need help because i am a single mother at my witts end.

What can I do next?

S.,
I dont know that I will be much help but at least maybe provide you some sanity. My ex boyfriend has an autistic son. He is almost 7 and has just now become potty trained. He had been wearing pullups until about a month ago. I think it just takes more time. I know we would always just take him to the bathroom every time we would think about. We would always ask him if he had to go too. Training him to pee on the toilet came first but #2 was a little harder. But after much time he is now completely trained. As I said he will be seven soon. Hope that at least lets you know you are not alone. Maybe he will have it down soon. Dont give up hope.

Oh how I remember that time period in Jareds life. Some Autistic children never potty train!Jared was 6 when he did.All I can give you advice to do is keep working on it. Because like the doc told me what the problem is.. Like everything else..His brain knows what to do, but he cant get his brain to move to the sensation to let the body know its time to go until its too late. Just keep working on it. and hopefully it will trigger.. Do you have other children that are is the same sex.. I think that is what triggered Jared, My nephew was living with us and he seen him going and one day he just said no more diapers. and went to the bathroom and I never had a to buy diapers again.. I am sure that was luck though.. Good luck.. By the way do you know about the Autism forum board!!online.. its a great resource the people on there can help you get threw alot..

Have you tried using a metal coffee can for urinating? It very well may help with making it entertaining for him. Also try being repititious. My nephew has Aspergers and actually as silly as it sound he and my son potty trained eachother.

I, too have an autistic son and tried everything in my power to get him to go #2. He was very hard to potty train also and I know how difficult of a time you are having. I know it's easy to say this, but don't give up. They will go when they are ready. My son didnt go until he was 6 in the potty. If you ever need to chat, just give me a shout and we'll talk some more. Try and keep your chin up

Hi S.. I have a 12 yr old son with Autism. He finally potty trained after he was in kindergarten. We use a picture system that hangs in our bathroom wall. It gives him a step by step instruction of what to do in the bathroom. Good luck.

Hi S.,

I am so sorry to hear about your son. Autism is a growing thing here in the US...1 in 151 children are diagnosed with this...they are linking it to the Vaccinations...so please don't have your son vaccinated any further...I know it is hard to believe that something that is suppose to keep our children healthy is actually hurting them. My friend Tamara Mariea is working with over 200 Autistic children in her practice, she is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist. She lives in Franklin, TN She has a studio at her home where she takes these children & their families in and helps them get the Mercury & other harmful heavy metals out of their bodies and brain! Please check out her website,

www.internalbalance.com

I believe it may cost you for a counceltation with her, but it is worth every penny to help your son to try to have a NORMAL life! She has so many success stories...She's Awesome. I apologize for not being able to help you with the potty training...though you have gotten some GREAT advice. If you call Tamara, please tell her that L. suggested you contact her.

Also, Mrs. Chung at the GET WELL CENTER in Mansfield is starting to work with Autistic children...she is using some of the methods that Tamara uses in her practice.
Her website is:

www.getwellcenterohio.com

Phone numbers & addresses can be found on both sites.

God's Blessings to You!

Hi my name is S. and my daughter is 4 and autistic. I feel your pain.... I can not get her to go in the potty at all. It has been months of work and I just got her to sit on the potty with out crying. It took her that long to figure out she was not in trouble. If you find out something that works let me know. If you need to talk or vent write me back

Dear S.,
I really hope other moms with older autistic kids reply to this, for I too have two autistic boys 5 on the 14th!!! and 7 and am having the same trouble potty training. Any input from experienced moms would be great. I must tell you though I went to a support group here in Northern KY for moms with children with special needs and one thing I learned and had to accept was that some of them have 20 year old sons that are now almost fully potty trained. Though it is scary to believe and accept. Know you're doing all you can but he will be ready when he's ready. Many hugs to you and I'll pray for you just as I do for myself. That God grants us more patience each day and strength. Good luck hun!

Hey S.! I don't really know much about Autism, though I know a couple of people with mildly autistic sons. I am just wondering where you are in Ohio since I, too, am in Ohio and as well left a horrible relationship. I have been out of mine since 2003, but maybe we could chit chat and support one another!! I am a single mom of two little girls, 5 and 6!!!

Hi S., My name is R. and I work with Autistic children......except that they are almost adult and not potty trained! We developed a training schedule for the one young man that I worked with every 2 hours, we would go into the bathroom and try and sit on the toliet. In doing that,he didn't go to the bathroom but, he learned to tolerate sitting on the toliet. This may work with younger children but, not with someone who is almost 18. He has to learn to tolerate the toliet before he'll use it. Personally I have a 13 year old with Asberger'sa nd her post tolieting hygine is not good so we're working on that at home. Hope this kind of helps.
