You could tell him that he can have a party. Don't specify that it is a birthday party, a lot of kids his age just like to have get togethers and have fun. Maybe a bonfire, order pizza? I don't know what he likes doing with his friends but give them the option of spending the night if there is any drinking (allowed or not, ya never know with kids) tents?

My daughter is also turning 17. I told her we could have a big party, invite all the girls over, get some movies, pizza, I'd even send the "boys", daddy and her brother away
She looked at me, rolled her eyes and said Um,,,,no.
When I asked her what she wanted, she said dinner at Red Lobster. So that is what she will get.

So ask him what he wants.
Maybe make some suggestions like paintball, bowling, shooting range, Six Flags, I don't know what your money situation is. Movies and pizza with some of the guys.

I don't know what your financial situation is but maybe a surprise party with a bunch of his friends or a surprise weekend road trip somewhere in your neck of the woods or ask him if he was wanting to do something specific and if not, then for sure, just surprise the kid:)

I would personally ask him what he wants for his birthday. Give him two options and let him choose. If you want to do a party by next weekend, it may be last minute and people won't be able to come. I love gift certificates and dinner for birthdays. Whats his favorite store to go to? Take him to his favorite restaurant. I'm sure he'd appreciate that. Its ok to give 20.00 gift certificates too. :)

Ask him. My 17 yo boy likes parties. He is perfectly capable of planning them himself. He and his friends, guys and girls, like playing games indoors and out: capture the flag, pictionary, mafia cut throat. I provide the house and food. My 15 yo would rather have a couple guy friends over to play xbox, or go out to eat. By the time they are teens, they pretty much know what they want.

Ask him what he wants to do, maybe he wants to do a new activity like bowling/paintball/laser tag/pool with a few friends... I didn't really have parties when I got into that age range, we usually went to a family dinner and maybe invited a good friend or two.

Bring him to DFW. Maybe Speed Zone. He could drive the go-karts and bungee jump.

Ask him.

My daughter turned 17 in December and she chose to have a quiet birthday this time. She's always had parties before, some huge with DJ and some on smaller scale. This was the first time no party. She and her boyfriend went to a nice dinner and we paid for it.

Daughter's boyfriend turned 18 in October and she threw him a surprise birthday party at our house. It was nice because his friends got together and made it a fun afternoon and evening for him. His mom didn't do anything.... I feel so bad for this kid... his mom only cares about herself.

Laser tag, Top Golf are both fun!

For my girls (15 and 16) and their friends (14 to 19), they basically just like all getting together and hanging out. Let him invite over a few friends and order a pizza.

If the family wants to celebrate, take him out to his favorite restaurant.

16 is generally the last year you get to do something. After that they don't really want to do anything with their parents. :(

After that I just let them pick a restaurant and we all went on, no friends, no extended family just us and the sibs. My oldest is 24, he can still be bought with food. :)
