I Need Help Changing My 5 and a 1/2 Month's Schedule

First, I'll start with what his schedule has been. My son wakes up about 7:15-7:30. About 8, he eats some rice cereal. Some days he eats a ton, other days, almost nothing at all. About 9:15, he takes a 8 oz bottle and goes down for a nap until about noon. At noon, he eates some fruits, again, sometimes a ton, other days almost nothing at all. About 2, he takes another 8 oz bottle and naps until about 4 or 4:30. At 4:30, he eats some veggies with the same as before, sometimes a ton, other days nothing at all. At 6 he takes a 8 oz bottle, and then again about 10 he takes another 8 oz bottle. He is sleeping through the night family, and I am SO excited for that. By this age, our older son was going down for bed about 8 or 8:30 and sleeping until about 7 as well. We would love our youngest to start moving in that direction. I'm not sure how to go about changing his schedule, and it took me until just about a few weeks ago to settle into this one. Any Tips?

What can I do next?

Honestly, your son eats more and sleeps more than any 5 month old I've ever heard of, so you may not want to mess with it! But look at this schedule - he's asleep more than he's awake until 4:30 in the afternoon -- no wonder he doesn't want to go to sleep til 10. You don't say what the problem is with just putting him to bed earlier, so I assume that he just doesn't go to sleep, in which case it sounds like you're going to have to mess with the naps. There is no power on earth that would make me want to shorten 4 1/2 hours of napping a day, but it depends on how much you want your evening back.

(And I'd recommend against finding a copy of Babywise. It sounds like you're doing the opposite of what they recommend, and therefore they will try to convince you you are ruining your child for life.)

I would thank my lucky stars if i ever had two infants that slept as well as yours do! My oldest had colic up thru 10 months (never slept thru night since birth) then went right into double ear infections (there went sleep again) but my youngest daughter would sleep from 8pm-5am every morning once she hit 3 months.

The one suggestion I would have would be about the feedings - I would limit the rice, veggies & fruit to an even amt so that way u can better judge how much he has. One thing the pediatrician told me was that if you want a baby to sleep more, fill their belly at the last feeding - we would give my oldest rice cereal in her bottle. I know most frown down upon that but we found that you do what works.

Good luck!

Try keeping him up a little bit longer during the times that he is awake during the day. Start by adding 15 minuted to each awake time. You can also do more physical things with him like getting down on the floor and going for walks for fresh air. It will tire him out before bedtime. God bless your family.

You sound like you're following the method called Baby Wise. I would just get a hold of that book. It really has a LOT of great idea for everything. I'm sure they say how to go about making changes.

A mother of multiple children I have found that each child is so different. So is it my understanding that your baby stays up until 10?

If so, I had a child who did that. I just kept him up longer in the day time. He went from two naps to one longer one. So when he was sleeping 4 hours a day (two 2hr naps) I went to having him have snack, then lunch then nap. He also was put down at earlier, and earlier. For instance we started getting ready for bed at 8:45, then 8:30, and 8:15 then 8:00. It was all the children who had to participate in this. Now my kiddos know at 7:30ish we have to start getting ready for bed. My three year old asks Mommy can I go to bed.

Good luck, that is our story, I hope you all goes well.
