On friday my son began having a very red irratated right eye. It was discharging green mucus to the point where it would seal his eye shut. Now the infection has spread to both eyes, and is discharging green mucus and sealing his eyes shut. I have tried benadryl and claritin for kids, I just dont know what to do. Should I take him to the emergency room, because I cannot get him in to the doc til fri.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got him some similasan eye drops and he seems like kis eyes arent bothering him as much. They still are quite red, but the mucus has really deminished. I will keep using the eye drops and if there isnt any more improvement I will take him to urgent care. I appreciate all your advice, you have helped me a lot.

It sounds like you son my have pink eye. I would just put some eye drops in his eyes and use a warm wash rag to take that dried mucus off of his eyes so he can open them, then add some visene (Spelling) to his eyes and that may help him until you can get him to the doctor on Friday.

This may sound strange but last year my son had goopy red eyes and it turned out to be an ear infection. Usually, if it is an infection, they will run a fever and for pink eye, etc... they will not (just my experience). If he has a fever, maybe the Dr. can get him in earlier.

Good Luck!

I hate the ER, and chances are you'll wait forever because they are not going to think conjunctivitis is "emergent". I have PPO insurance, so if it were me, I would get out my insurance book and call around to find a doctor who could see him sooner. If you don't have a PPO type plan where you can go to any doctor, maybe see if your doctor can call in a script for some eyedrops. My son had pink eye last year and that's what our doctor did. If they absolutely won't call you in a script and they cannot fit you in within the next couple of days, ask them what you should do in the mean time. Ask to speak to one of the nurses or ask to have the doctor call you directly. If they will not help you out, I'd look into finding a new doctor all together. You shouldn't have to wait that long to get relief for your son. Good luck!

Hi, you should wash his eyes out with a saline solution, the same thing you use to wash contact lenses, and you can get it pretty cheap anywhere. Make sure to wipe his eyes from the inside corner out, that way the infection won't continue to get into his tear ducts. If it isn't better by later today or, at the latest, tomorrow morning, you should take him to the doctor, if you can. He's probably going to cry when you do this, mine always do, but it's for his own good. Hope this helps!

Hi P., I would second Olivia's advice on the "Similasan Pink Eye Relief" eye drop. We try to stay away from antibiotic whenever possible and this drop has worked wonderfully with our son. He had similar problem as your son a while back and it cleared up within 2 days. All you have to do is keep his eyes clean (remove his green mucus with sterile cotton and saline solution (or just clean water)) and apply a few drops of Similasan to each eye a few times per day and you should see improvement by the end of the day or next day. You can find it in Walmart, Target, drug stores. Good luck! F.

he's got pink eye and needs to get on an antiobiotic. I'd take him to the ER if your doc won't get him in. It's very contageous and quite irritating... itches very badly... he needs to get seen asap. I'd see if your doc would at least call you in a prescription to utilize if you must wait...but I'd go to an urgent care place before I'd do nothing at all.

He has pink eye, and if you call the doctor request to speak to the nurse. Most of the time for pink eye the doctor will just have the nurse call in a prescription to the pharmacy. He definitely NEEDS antibiotic..it is very contagious so make sure you wash your hands so it doesn't spread to you or the rest of your family.

I wouldn't take him to the emergency room, but I would take him to his pediatrician. It sounds like classic symptoms of pink eye which is highly contagious, that's why it spread so easily to his second eye. Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is the redness and swelling of the mucous membrane of his eyelid and eye.
Cold compresses or warm compresses (whichever feels best) can be used. If an allergy is the problem, a cool compress may feel better. If the pinkeye is caused by an infection, a warm, moist compress may soothe your eye and help reduce redness and swelling. Warm, moist compresses can spread infection from one eye to the other. Use a different compress for each eye, and use a clean compress for each application.

Most likely the doctor will give him an topical antibiotic to treat. Good luck and everything will be ok.

All doctors have appointment times they save for sick same-day appts. CAll your doc and tell them you think your son has pink eye. They should get you in the same day. Pink eye is very contagious...even for you, Mom! Be sure to wash your hand after any contact with your son, especially if you are cleaning his eye out!! If you can't get in to see your doc, I would seriously consider Urgent Care. If he needs an anti-biotic, only a Dr. can prescribe that, plus it could be a sign of another infection. Call the Dr. back and let them know you need to be seen today...most doctors I know of take pink eye pretty seriously!

I also think this sounds like pink eye. In conjuction with the drops, I would wash his sheets every day, wash his towels everyday, wash your hands everytime you touch his face or give him drops, and generally disinfect everything daily. I know this is a pain, but trust me it will be worth it. My daughter and I both recently had pink eye but my husband did not get it and I think it is because I was so careful to clean everything. I did this for about a week, even after our eyes seemed to clear up.
Also my doc said that in about 20% of kids with pink eye, they also have an ear infection, so I would try to get him to see a doc.
another item of note, our doc gave us drops not an oral antibiotic for the pink eye.

There is an over the counter medicine called Semalisan for Pink Eye. I would try that before going to the emergency room for Pink Eye. Sometimes it is just allergies and viral so an antibiotic eye drop will not help. When it is viral, they usually have cold symptoms as well. Check it out on WebMD, it has alot of good information.

It's probably pink eye. It is very contagious but very curable. Take him to the dr or call and maybe they will give you a rx over the phone for it. It should clear up in a few days w/the eye drops they give you. Make sure he and you wash your hands alot so you dont spread it. Good Luck!

Pink eye for sure. I am about 6 years short of a medical degree, Ha! Ha!, but worked in day-care for 20+ years and saw it all the time. He needs antibiotic. I would not go the OTC route. Call the doc tell him your child has pink eye and see if he will call in a prescription and if not get him in ASAP. It is very contagious, but if you are careful maybe you won't spread it to the rest of the family. Wash your hands frequently and the childs too and toys that are touched, linens, etc.

Good Luck!

Tell your doctor you need to see him right away because your son probably has pink eye. If they know the issue, I'm sure they will squeeze him in. Otherwise, go to an urgent care center; you won't have to wait as long as at the ER or be exposed to as many germs. Once you get the antibiotic drops, the eyes will clear up right way.

Hope this helps,

M.
