I May Be the Only One That Thinks This Way Breast Cancer...

What are your thoughts?

I was just reading an article about Breast Cancer myths and 'facts'.

The thing that bothered me more than anything else was that they kept repeating over and over again that Dr's still don't really KNOW what causes it...

But they know what doesn't cause it? Doesn't make a ton of sense to me. If they know what doesn't cause it, wouldn't that eliminate a lot of possibilities? My personal opinion, they're still guessing. But of course one of my favorite sayings is 'Opinions are like @ssholes... Everyone has one and they all stink.'

I know that it's a serious disease that anyone can in fact get. But I believe that everything can somehow be 'linked' to causing some sort of cancer... Or in the very least be accused of being linked to it. Really... Think about it. Anything 'foreign' in the lungs can cause lung cancer. That is anything besides O2 + Co2. CO being one of the worse offenders regularly found in the air. The sun can give you skin cancer, but without sunshine completely, we tend to get a vitamin D deficiency causing more viruses that we can't fight off naturally. Anything being on our food can cause all kinds of different cancers from mouth to colon and everywhere in between.

I think you get my point... I know my thoughts and ideas and what I think I might chose to do if I were to ever get a cancer that doesn't necessarily bode well on my future.

But I'm curious on others ideas and thoughts too.

*and yes... to those wondering... I have watched people die of many different types of cancers*

So What Happened?

@ Page W. - You may know people that opted out of any medical intervention when they found out they had cancer and died... But I know MANY people that got diagnosed with some kind of cancer (2 Breast, 2 Prostate, 1 lung, 1 Ovarian/Uterine, and 1 survivor). The only one that didn't opt for any treatment was the lung cancer patient. He was diagnosed with Stage 4, inoperable, extremely aggressive, and the Dr said he MIGHT live an extra 2-4wks. He decided to stay comfortable and happy to be with his family for those last couple months.

The rest- Both breast cancers were treated with chemo and radiation and 'cured' (by what the Dr's said). One of them died of bone cancer 6mos later at age 42 (didn't smoke or drink and ate healthy) and the other died of cancer ridden throughout her body after surgery, chemo, and radiation treatments. She was a smoker and had quit. She was 61.

My grandfather decided to go with chemo and radiation treatments for his prostate cancer diagnosed at age 73. It was 'cured'. Found cancer in his lymphnodes. Another round of chemo and radiation. 'Cured'. Found cancer in his adrenal gland. Died shortly there after. Had smoked and quit for my grandmother's health (her's was worse than his and she'd never smoked). He was 74. My step-uncle was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 62. Decided to treat symptoms only. He died at 80.

The ovarian/uterine cancer- She started having severe abdominal pain at 78 when her husband decided to take her to the hospital where they opened her up to find cancer had taken over her entire body... Starting with her ovaries and uterus. Dr's determined that she'd likely lived for more than 20yrs with cancer. She died comfortably in her own home about a month later.

The one survivor I know was extremely young when she was diagnosed... Teenager. Chemo and radiation helped put her cancer into remission.

So, you tell me what you would do knowing all of this info and watching all of these people.

I see it as "something increases the risk of".

If I drive my car sober, I may or may not have an accident. I I drive drunk, I may or may not have an accident but the odds are much higher. So, I drive sober.

For cancer, most risk factors are unknown, not clear or linked to some benefits (sun for Vitamin D, milk...) and the odds are higher in some smaller proportions than driving drunk. So, I don't live in fear. I use the microwave, and teflon pans. But I avoid unhealthy behaviors, exercise and eat a balanced diet.

This may not be a popular response, but I'm going to go there anyway. ;)
There is a LOT of money in the cancer industry. While some things have improved in some ways, most have not. We've had friends who have been told that there wasn't really any hope, but let's go ahead an do chemo/radiation anyway. They still passed away, but the last few weeks of their life were miserable, made moreso by the horrible drugs/radiation. Why did they do this? Why on earth would they put someone through that nightmare when they KNEW it wouldn't really help? Money. It behooves them to keep doing research (there is a TON of money in research), coming up with new drugs (which cause other problems that need to be treated-this is true of all pharmaceuticals), keep the people dependant upon their messed-up, corrupt system. What else can we do? Educate ourselves! Learn a better way. Stay away from antibiotics unless *absolutely necessary.* We've not had any antibiotics in our home for at least 15 years. Eat as well as you can afford (organics, etc), grow your own garden using heirloom seeds (stay away from Monsanto, which is where most of our food comes from), use herbs, homeopathics, tinctures. Find a good, reputable chiropractor. Study, read, know how to care for your family. Research, research, research. If you want some good book titles/websites, let me know and I can help. There really ARE alternatives. Big pharma is trying to ban suppliments, vitamins, growing your own garden (!), etc. because they want to control the people. They want us totally dependant upon them for everything. Learn now while you have the opportunity. Blessings!

I have an aunt that will not buy Teflon pans, will not use plastic in the micro wave, who buys only organic, because she thinks everything will cause cancer. She has had cancer twice and her husband died last year from cancer. The way I figure it, we just do not know, so there is no point in living your life in fear. I lost my aunt on the first of this year, my husband has lost him mom when he was 8, as well as 2 uncles to cancer. We know the devastation of that loss, but we will not live in fear of everything around us. We just live the best way we know how, that is all any of us can do.

When I was in high school, I read an article in my hometown newspaper (an award winning paper, by the way) that milk causes cancer. At that point, I figured if something as healthy as milk could cause something as bad as cancer, then I was basically screwed. I decided to try and live healthy and happy and not worry too much about dreaded illnesses that could come my way. That way, if I did get one, I could say I had lived a full, happy life, no matter how old I was.

It'll be interesting to see what everyone else has to say!

I agree - the studies that have been conducted have cost billions (if not more) and they still keep guessing? They can't link it to anything at all? Obviously every affect has a cause, and I think it's mostly environmental factors or genetics. There are probably hundreds of factors though. I have to go in for a biopsy in December to check for cervical cancer because I was diagnosed with HPV through a pap smear. It's so scary to think cancer is something you can 'catch'. I wish that they could find some evidence and go with it instead of having their own opinions and guessing. People's lives are at stake!

Tonya C...I totally agree with your post!!!!! I heard/read/watched some where that there is a cure for breast cancer. (do not quote me on this, but its stuck in my head cause I do vaguely recall hearing this) If our society learned the truth, we would be outraged. That means drs., hospitals, drug companies, research, etc....would be out BILLIONS of dollars.

$$$$$$$$ runs this world. That is a GIVEN!

WAYYYYYY too many ppl are dying of some form of cancer. ITs just mind boggling to hear of those lost due to cancer. TRULY with a passion believe its what our environment offers. The food we eat, the vitamins, the medicines, the pesticides, the air we breath, etc... what it all does to our bodies.

What our world has creates the illness we get. Strong believer in that. If you live in Southern CaL or Northern Cal, look out into the hills on a hot day, with polarized sunglasses...look at the quality of air we breath. Im disgusted by it. Amazed of why our government isn't doing more to keep our air quality healthier. The chemicals we put into our air, that we breath, then injest to our bodies....

Do monkeys get cancer? what about a pig? Aren't they relatively similiar internally as we are? As anyone ever heard of any of these animals getting cancer? Unless is was by experiemental reasons?

We could be using our natural resources to provide us with a healthier living. It would still generate jobs....just everyone is so $$$$$$ hungry, they are will to sacarifice lives for it. Look at the recent news of ppl back in the 40's given a STD for research purposes and then never treated. How sick is that? What does that tell you???

Corrupt! $$$$ hungry, there are cures! at least I believe there are. Imagine if we found out there were. No one would be sick, no one would be dying, no one would receive chemo/radiation, surgeries, hospital visits, etc. With the technology we have today...why wouldnt we have a cure already???? Especially with a disease so common in soooooooo many ppl its ridiculous.

my thoughts, love and prayers go out to the families/friends of those who lost someone to a form of cancer. Truly sad :(

I hear ya. There are very few things we know for sure. Many things are just a guess. It's hard to trust. But, I do believe you go with your gut and do the best you can. Take in as much information as is in your comfort level and make a personal decision. That's all you've got, and in the end trust whatever happens will be okay.......whatever that is.

I think alot of it is pre-disposition and genetics. They can do BRAC analysis and tell you if you have the gene for breast cancer. You might not get it if you do and you might get it if you don't, but it will tell you odds.

Some cancers are caused by viruses (HPV etc) some aren't. Some are caused by lifestyle (lung cancer) some aren't.

I don't know that much about cancer as it doesn't 'run in my family' but ask me about heart disease and I'm a walking encyclopedia (shows my age too!!!! or I would've said internet page) of information.

Sometimes pre-disposition wins out. My mom's side of the family - no heart disease. My grandpa (mom's dad) ate a pound of bacon every day and then my grandma cooked everything else for the day in the bacon grease. They ate using real butter and put cheese on everything!!!! (and I mean everything). We had mashed potatoes with gravy and EVERYTHING bad that will have a cardiologist ready to have a heart attack on the spot. But both my grandparents were thin, low cholesterol and lived to be 85 and 92, repsectively - no heart problems whatsoever.

So, I think it's mostly genetics. Then - how you live your life with the genetics you get. I think that's for everything, including cancer.

I know underwire bras have been linked to breast cancer, which is a purely mechanical factor. Also, African Americans and Asians get slightly different and more aggressive forms of breast cancer than Caucasian females. And some males can get breast cancer as well. So, there are a lot base category dynamics going on there alone.

And no, not knowing what doesn't cause something, doesn't prove the elimination theory here. Considering there are literally thousands of factors, depending on food, genetics, race, age, environmental factors... it's kind of a shot in the dark to think the cause can be pinpointed simply because we know some details on what doesn't cause it.

My family has every cancer under the sun in it, mostly blood disorders like leukemia and rhabdo... over 6 people have it in my family (several of which have died) and yet it isn't considered genetic.

Though, feel free to go to medical school and find the cure. In the meantime, try and live as healthy as you can, and remember that the constant research is providing cures for other types of diseases in the meantime, and the survival rate of breast cancer is improving when caught early through home testing. Our bodies are designed to deteriorate over time, and be fragile from impact and such.

I have always told myself that if I had BC I would completely remove my breasts, really could I go on the rest of my life like that don't know I just try mt best to stay away from the known causes,if it were any other cancer then you remove a body part or organ then by all means do so if it is going to add yrs to my life not months, LIFE itself isn't guranteed.I'm scared to death of cancer getting it my hubby family or children. Here I think i'm doing good on their diets vitamins excercise etc but really what am I missing if they were to come down ill..I have 1 family member that had BC she is the only family member that I know of that had any type of cancer this was when I was younger before all the treatment options they have today & she is a survivor 15 or more yrs now..
I think we all "WISH" that we knew the causes & had answers & 100% curable treatments that's not just for cancer but all health related issues.

I agree with you that cancers can be caused by anything and evrything in our lives. Can we lower our exposure to risks, to a point, I think so. My father had non hodgekins (or maybe it was without the non) lymphoma and my sister had breast cancer. That raises my risk. However, my father was a 2+ pack a day smoker and my sister still smokes almost a pack a day. She denies that but whatcha gonna do? Anyway, they also did not eat the best for good health. I truly believe the choices you make in life, how you lead your life, can affect your chances of an illness or cancer. I have never smoked, do not allow anyone to smoke in my home--require my sis to take several deep breathes before she is allowed in my home or car. I also am not a big meat eater and prefer fruits and veggies though not a vegetarian or anything like that. I do sometimes eat too many sweets or what have you since I am not perfect and do not try to be. I do not buy mostly organic stuff either but do look for unmodified or hormone free products. I insist on sunscreen because I had a very bad and painful sunburn when I was younger and do not ever want to experience that nor do I want my children to either. But I am not going to bubble wrap them or not let them enjoy life because something out there could possibly in some way or other have a bad effect on them, be it cancer or illness or whatever.

I think there are many factors.

But I'd be curious to know "what you might do if you were ever to get cancer." Get the appropriate treatment, I hope.

I know of more than one person who chose to forgo traditional cancer treatment and instead treat their cancer alternatively, and they are now dead.

Well put, Jen C. and Stephanie F.!
