I Have No Idea What's Going On. . .potty Question

So my son has been great and pretty much potty trained himself. I don't know if he's not feeling well or what's going on, so any ideas/advice would be great! Let me start by saying he's been potty trained with #1 since early this year. It took a while for #2, but we haven't had that kind of accident in weeks. He goes to school two days a week, and I woke him up Thurs for school to a horrible smell. I knew he poo pooed in his pull up (still wears at night). It was mushy and gross, and I had to stick him in the bath tub. I thought he must have had a tummy ache or something because it's always solid. He did fine at school with no accidents the rest of the day.

Yesterday, he had three accidents in his underwear, and all were bad mushy. I had to throw two pair of underwear away, and I stuck him in the tub for a couple of them. This morning he woke up to the same thing in his pull up. What in the world? He's going much more (and off of his normal schedule), and it's really gross and runny. It has to be that something's going on with his tummy. Surely this isn't anything to do with potty training, right?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I think you all are right. I think it's some stomach thing. Poor baby poo pooed in the bath tonight without even realizing it. We put him on the toilet, and there was a lot more and really yucky. My poor little angel. He doesn't act sick or anything, so I guess that's good. We'll try the BRAT beginning tomorrow. Thanks ladies!

Definitely sounds to me like he has a tummy bug. They usually run their course within a week (though my hubby had one recently that went 10 days). There is no way that he could have runny stool because of potty training. Children can't change the consistency of their bowel movements on purpose. Try the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast only) diet, maybe that will help.

As Alli K said, the BRAT diet works well. That's what I would do when my kids went through these spells. He must have some kind of virus or something and will probably recover in a few days. I would watch his temperature and pay close attention to fluids. If he stops drinking fluids, take him in right away. Kids dehydrate at a rapid rate. This is the time to give him extra water (no gatorade...it can stimulate loose stools due to the glucose level, or sugar, and the salt may cause him to retain water, but pedialite is safe). Also, the acidophilus in the yogurt is very healthy for our normal flora in our gut. If he eats this just about everyday it might help with the odor and could help with the soft stools. If he's got a normal temp, is acting fine, and is keeping fluids down, I would only worry if this continued for more than a week. And remember, no juice or sugar products this week..........

Maybe try waking him up at night to go potty. I would also make sure that during the day he would take frequent visits to the restroom. It would be helpful to lay a pad underneath him for the time being when he goes to bed, too.

It's not fun, I know, but it's normal and will pass......it sounds like you have a healthy little guy who rarely gets sick. With this being a new experience for you, that says a lot. Keep up the good work!

Good luck!

It is deifinatly something going on in his tummy. He either ate something that is really upsetting, or doesn't agree with his system even if it does rest of family or he has a bug going around.

First how long has he been going to care twice a week? If not for long check to see what he gets to eat there and for snack and drink. If he is not used to drinking juice and is being given that it could cause it. A change in his diet would cause this. Make sure you are giving him fluids but not juice and encourage cheese if he likes it like mine does no problem. Apple juice with clean out a system in a heart beat if you do not give cheese or something that would normally constipate with it. If it continues through monday I would call doc and get him in they can dehydrate so easy at this young age.

You need to check this info with your pediatrician and I would take him to to check to make sure everything is okay, but my sister is a pediatrician and this is what she told me about sudden diarreha with toddlers. She said that it can sometimes be related to too much sugar in their diet - even the "good" sugars from fruits. She told me to try three things, and it cleared up my 10mo old in 2 days. You can put a probiotic like Culturelle and mix it in with their sippy cup (milk is best)- lots of whole apples or apple sauce made with the skin (there is something about the pectin that helps things firm up) and bananas (the potassium I think helps). She told me to avoid all other fruits and fruit juices (even apple juice becuase it doesn't have the pectin) and especially pears and pear juice as they contain sorbitol and help to loosen stools. She said to also look for other hidden sugars that might be getting into the diet, like though yogurt etc and cut those out for a while as well. Hope that helps!
