My daughter Kaitlyn will be 20 weeks old on dec 12, and she has her second cold, and just like last time she had not been around anybody that was sick and so I am using saline drops, I suction out her nose, and if she runs a fever I give her tylenol just like the nurse's told me to do, could these cold's have something to do with teething? She is teething and I read that a runny nose is part of it, but she has had a little tiny cough and the sneezing is something she has done since birth, so what do you all think is it not a cold and maybe just caused by teething? She goes for a check-up on thursday dec 14.
My second question is about eating, in the mornings I feed her rice ceral and then she wants a bottle after that, I am glad she is eating well ,but I do not want to feed her too much, does anyone have an opinion about this?

So What Happened?

Update! Kaitlyn went to the Doctor on dec 14, and she weighs 12 pounds, 15 oz and she is very healthy! I asked her Doctor several questions including about her cold and runny nose, she was not worried about it, she told me to just keep giving her saline drops and if she runs a fever to give her tylenol, and her ears and nose and everything is fine! Her Doctor was ok with the amounts of food and milk that she has, and she is glad that she eats so good and me too! I felt much better when I asked the Doctor some questions!
I hope you all are doing good and Merry Christmas!
J.

Hi J.

Yes you are partly right, symptoms such as runny nose and wet coughs are part of teething but if there are fevers thats generally means there is an infection and her body is trying to fight it. So tylenol is good to use for that. Sneezing since birth is a babys way of getting everything out because they cannot blow their nose.
I have a six month old and she has a bottle after she eats baby food/cereal also so I believe that is fine. But I would just ask your pediatrician and if she is not gaining too much weight then I would not worry about it. I hope I helped.

J., relax honey your first child always have a mom edgey. As far as the cold goes as long as shes not weezing, she's pretty much alright. This is the cold sesion. Yes her runny nose can be from teething or it could just be a common cold. watch her make sure her fever dont spike and you cant get it down if that happens then you know you need to take her to the ER. Now you say she's been sneezing sense birth she might very well just have allergies(treatable).Dont worry her nose wont pop off(lol).Just ask the doctor when you go. About her eatting i have noticed kids are more active today then 7 or 8 years ago, so she need a little more i for one feels it's o.k. i did mine the same way and there healthy teens,pre-teens and kids, but a good thing to do is give water. How this helps even if only a little. Dont worry to much, but i'm a mother and i know you are. I still fret over my babies and my oldest is 15 but when he get's sick i feel as though he's that new born baby boy. I find my-self not sleeping afraid something will happen to them if i go to sleep and there sick. But that's just being a mother. Good Luck and let us know how your doctor vist goes. C.

Hi J.,

My daughter did the same thing. My pediatrician told me that the coughing and sneezing were her way of clearing out her nasal and bronchial passages and she would probably do that for the first 6-8 months. She is now 7 months and she has stopped. As for the cold, my little girl had a cold tha lasted for about a month and a half. I used PediaCare Decongestant/Cough. It was recommended by my Pediatrician. I just kept sucking our her noce and using saline drops in additoin to the PediaCare and she was eventually over it.

Hope your little girl feels better soon!

If she is teething, then the cough could simply be from the excess saliva in her mouth and she is not used to having to swallow it. I would feel safe in assuming that if her fever is low grade, the cough doesn't sound wet or productive in any way and she continues to eat well then she is teething and nothing more. You can give motrin and tylenol alternately, call your pediatrician for doses for her weight.
About the feeding, what do you consider too much? I have two girls that were both fed on demand. Babies that small are going to spit it out when they dont want anymore. I think you are fine, just dont force her to eat and she will stop when she is full I promise. And dont worry about your baby being too big or having weight problems. When she gets older you teach her to eat well (fruits, veggies and lean protiens) and she will have that skill for life.

Hi J.!

You say that she hasn't been around anyone that has been sick. Have you taken her to Wal-mart, the grocery store, the mall? Germs are everywhere. But its just a cold. And with this crazy weather-we all get the runny nose and stuff. With the cough-if its persistent, then I would take her to the doctor. With teething-I've never noticed a runny nose with my children; but they would run a low-grade fever. If your daughter's fever is anything over 100, its not teething.

Now with her eating so much-you didn't specify how much rice cereal she was eating or how many ounces she was taking after eating cereal. Its OK. Its like us eating something and needing a drink to wash it down. If you are concerned with the amount she's eating or drinking, try giving her water after the cereal. Trust me, the doctor will let you know if she's overweight.

Hope this info helps!
