I Have a K...what Was the Last Day of School like for Your Child?

Or the even the last week? Is the whole week/day a total blow off? Our promotion ceremonies will be held a week before and our end of the year class party will be held the day before. And now they are being released 2 hrs early on the last day of school. Will it even be worth it to send our son to school on the last day or week?

What can I do next?

Some parents do blow it off and that is sad. It sets a bad example for the children.

The children whose parents do blow it off are basically teaching the children that it is ok to blow off school at the end of the year. Those are the children who end up not being motivated, driven and having the desire to achieve... even at a K level.

The teachers enjoy the last day/week with their students.
They work on projects up until the last day of school.
They celebrate their accomplishments throughout the year.
The children have made some friendships that will last a lifetime and enjoy being with their friends.

The last day of school is like a rite of passage when they celebrate moving up to the next level.

Of course it's worth it! There is usually a MAJOR cleaning out of the classroom which means your son will come home with a bag/box full of treasures. The last day of school is special, don't you remember that from your own childhood?

my son is in pre k and this is the school ( pre k - 4th grade) schedule for the week:

Monday: normal day, start of bringing things home.

Tuesday: Field day ( people bring in wild ( tamed) birds of prey, pelts, feathers for the kids to see, they do an outdoor project and plant seeds, they get to see unusual insects and different plant life that grows in the area..) In case of rain it will sports and games in the gym.

Wednesday: Make up day for Field day in case of rain otherwise sports and games outside.

Thursday: doing final touch up on things that need done and clean up and packing the room. They get out at 12:30. This is their last day.

I don't think its a "blow off" but it's more of a fun week for the kids since really their minds are already starting to check out for the summer. It lets the kids have fun with their class before leaving them for the summer.

I would let him go and have fun with his class... its a reward for being so good and having to sit in a classroom all year.

Our daughters classes were totally still working on projects, finishing up projects. Many were working on their summer workbooks so they could continue all summer.

Last visit to the library. Tons of stuff..

What shocked me the most was that on the last day, so many teachers asked that parents not come up to school that day. They wanted the last day to be just them and their class. I thought it was so sweet.

Also when we used to have the last day of school. That last bell, everyone ran out of the school so excited.. Here the kids were all crying.. They were going to miss their teachers, their classes, their classmates. Amazing.

My kiddo was still working on things and there is more to the K thing than just the work, it is the end of school ritual and ending the year with their friends/class. It builds the sense of community among these little ones. I'd be sure to send your child all the way through the last day, even if they don't do squat:) (Oh - unless you have a fabulous vacation planned that can't be rescheduled. In my mind that takes a front row seat to kindergarten, but you still need to discuss it with the teachers)
Also, if your child doesn't go they still count as unexcused absenses which, if in a public school, could cause some issues.

The last week of school is usually the most fun for the kids. They get to celebrate their accomplishments, have fun with their friends, say good-bye to many of their friends that they won't see, classroom parties, celebrations of summer birthdays, and a whole host of other fun stuff!

The last day or week of school is very exciting.
YES... send your son to school. Or he will miss out on seeing his friends a last time and miss out on any goodies or special moments with his Teacher. Some Teachers also give out to their students, something special.
So yes, it is worth it to send your son to school that day.

For my kids, they have school work until the end of school. But on the day before or the last day, they have class parties and events. And each student is responsible for cleaning out their desk and then they bring home ALL of their school things.
So.... that is another reason why your son should attend school on the last day or week.
It is important.

I have a son in Kindergarten and a daughter in 4th grade.
The last week of school is very important.

I would not blow off the last week. Especally if he's had many abcences from school. Even in K they are considered unexcused and 5 consecutive days of unexcused absence in the state of TX I belive can end you up in court for truency. Not a good idea.

Our last days are a Monday and Tuesday. Monday is field day and Tuesday is a half day. I wouldn't say they are "blow off" days, but I don't think a lot of lessons will be taught. I think it will be more free time and the kids will probably have fun with their friends and socialize (that's what I remember doing...). I'd send him for sure. I remember the fun of those last couple days - it's also a little sad and exciting saying good bye to school and hello to summer break.

academically, no. but there's a rising sense of excitement and accomplishment mingled with the sadness of endings that's very sweet. unless you have a compelling reason not to send him, why not?

From what my daughter is telling me - they are still learning new things this week (she's in preschool). Her last day is tomorrow (reminds me I need to take her picture since it's the last day!!!) She told me the new things they have been learning about sea creatures and continues to bring home her art work that she's done this week. No homework for the first time all year (even though none of it has been hard). Can't believe my little girl will be ready for 'real school' next year. I'm excited but sad at the same time!! I do remember, on the other hand, the last few days of school being so fun and relaxing and carefree. I'd definitely send him!!
