My 8 month old is on breast milk and baby food. He does great on the first foods and second foods which are pretty pureed. Any time I try any of the stage 3 foods he gags and nearly throws up, no matter which brand/flavor. It is the texture. I seems like my first was already doing stage 3 and some finger foods, bannas ect. he was never a gagger. I know they are all different.I feel bad everytime he gags. I give him a week or so then try just a little again. No progress. Any suggestions? When did your baby move on from the very pureed foods? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My exclusively breastfed daughter did the same thing with *all* solids till she was 9 months old. She wouldn't take anything and that was ok. I chalked it up to her telling me what she did and didn't need.

Just keep trying at one week intervals and don't stress over it. Solids are just for practice at this point anyway. Breastmilk should continue to be his primary source of nutrition until age 1(or beyond-I never felt comfortable giving my new 1 year olds cow's milk)

My 8month DD gags on stage 3 sometimes... I will usually thin it out just a little bit with water, so it still has chunks but the 'baby food' part isn't so thick. She likes it a lot better that way!

My son was a gagger. Of course he had to be...I guess it was not enough that I was already an anxious constant worrying mother to begin with. He did the same thing as your son, so as a result we did not switch him over to Stage 3 until around 11 months old. Even then, he still did only about half chunky foods until about many 13 or 14 months old. I can see now, as a 3 year old, some of the reason why he was that way...today he is a very particular eater and there are certain things that he definitely does NOT like not matter what I do.

Mine is nearly 10 months and STILL gags on the stage 3's, teething cookies or anything that's not pureed. I'm just giving up for now and I'll try again in a month....it's awful seeing her gag like that and I know it's awful for her. Not worth it to me.

I'm having a similar issue with my 9 month old, not with gagging but spitting out. Certain textures he's just not ready for yet, and he is having problems learning to "chew" with his gums (he only has two bottom teeth). Some days he does really well, and then the very next day he doesn't want anything to do with it; it's two steps forward, one step back. I think some days he just doesn't want the hassle, he's too busy learning other things that he would rather focus on.

The advice that I've gotten is just to give it time and to have patience he will learn soon enough. Sounds like you're doing everything "right" so hopefully you can at least feel reassured knowing that. Just keep trying periodically, perhaps you could vary the foods you give as he may be developing a preference for different flavors. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my now 18 month old. He is still working on chewing textured foods. Be patient, eventually he will learn with practice. I also think it will help once he has some molars to chew with. I bought a small hand food mill and put all the foods through it (still do). I encourage him to bite and chew by giving him berries, goldfish and small pieces of bread and cheese. Someone also recommended veggie sticks as a snack to practice biting and chewing and it worked - my son loves them. He recently started to be able to chew and swallow rice and small (alphabet) pasta (well cooked) without gagging. Good luck!

Just stop giving them to him for now. Our son wasn't offered ANYTHING but breastmilk for the first 9 months. And even after we started other foods at 9 months, there were still days that he would choose to only breastfeed. He is telling you that he is not ready. That's all!
