I Can't Sleep B/c I'm Soooooo Hungry All the Time!! (I'm Pregnant)

I just found out that I'm pregnant again after last months miscarriage. I'm only just shy of 5 weeks but for the last 2 weeks, my appetite has been insatiable! I started out at 95lbs, and I'm now 101. I am constantly eating, and constantly hungry! I'll eat a huge meal and I'm hungry an hour later, so I'll have a banana or some crackers, etc. Then another meal an hour later, etc. I've been eating a total of about 5 meals and 2 or 3 snacks a day! For instance: I ate a big bowl or beef stew with 3 pieces of italian bread at 6, then at 9 I had a package of 6 cheddar/peanut butter crackers, a banana, a string cheese and a bottle of water, and it's 1am now and I feel like I havn't eaten all day!
I am having a hard time sleeping b/c of this constant hunger and it's really annoying! This is my 5th pregnancy (2 living so far) and I have never felt like this. Is this fairly common or should I discuss this with the doc? I'm all for gaining the weight (Lord knows I need it!) but this doesn't seem normal!

What can I do next?

I was hungry all the time, too. I loved Chinese food buffets and I just wanted to eat everything I could find that had lots of broccoli in it. At night, I'd get up, use the bathroom, eat a few slices of Velveeta cheese, and get out a few damp wash cloths I kept in the fridge to cool my feet off with (my feet were so hot all the time they sometimes kept me awake). That hunger would sometimes just appear out of the blue. Try to eat frequent healthy snacks.

During the 3rd, 4th and 5th months of pregnancy I was like this!!!! I'd wake up every couple hours needing to eat, feeling starved and sick like I hadn't eaten in a day or more. The 1st and 2nd month I NEVER wanted to eat though, and once I got into the 6th month it slowed up alot. Since then it's just gone down even more, I'm nine months and almost never hungry. I'd say it's pretty normal (normal for pregnancy, which can be so weird of course!). If your dr. is concerned with your weight gain (speed of it) I'd talk to her about eating so often but otherwise, no big deal. Just try to eat as healthy as possible :) GOOD LUCK and congrats!!!!

Try a high-protein snack before bed. It may stick with you longer than carbs, which I can't eat in the evening or I'm guaranteed to wake up hungry, and I'm not even pregnant. Fats are also good, but may unsettle your sleep if you have any heartburn or digestion issues.

Bring it up to your doc and see what they say. I ate all day during my pregnancy. I also remember being more hungry at night and in the morning then I was in the afternoon or early evening. I also was very active during my pregnancy (probably more then I should have been) and i threw up a lot, so I just figured the eating was due to those 2 factors. I would still mention it to your doc.

Totally normal! (though it never hurts to run stuff past your doc) I was up every night at least once throughout most of my pregnancy. I started stocking up on healthy middle of the night snacks (is that an oxymoron? i guess not when you're pregnant) One that seemed to fill me up and takes little effort is cereal. I love the whole grain cheerios. Another that takes minimal effort is a bagel with peanut butter. Try to just go with it, eat whenever you are hungry. Especially if you need to gain weight, this is your chance to eat everything in sight! :)

This sounds pretty normal to me. It sounds like you are eating healthy foods which is great. Whats not normal is sudden, strong urges to eat thing that are not food. Like chalk or charcoal,If this happens call you doctor, fight those kinds of urges. You may think this sounds crazy, but this condition has a name and is very dangerous. (i'm sorry I cant remember what it's called) just be aware. Good luck on your pregnancy.

It may help to drink plenty of water (which you need to do anyways throughout pregnancy) and eat food high in protein, low on fats.
Sounds like you are pretty skinny, so maybe your body needs the extra weight to support the baby so I would not worry too much about gaining weight.

Hi Bethany---I think it's probably a normal occurance...although it's really hard to know what is normal as we are all so different and unique. I would recommend making sure that whatever you eat has as much fiber as possible. Be sure you are not eating too many simple carbs...anything white: bread, rice or potatoes, as well as boxed/processed foods. Eating complex carbs: WHOLE grains, fruits, veggies, beans (legumes), nuts and seeds, will all stick with you much longer.

Proteins and fats do slow digestion, but you don't want to eat too much of either one of them. Have your whole grain toast with nut butters. Eat a bowl of old-fashioned rolled oats with dried fruit, nuts and ground flax before you go to bed. Have a salad with whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, etc) and/or beans and roasted veggies before bed. NEVER eat fat free salad dressings. Fat gives foods a desirable mouth feel. Manufacturers add lots of sugar to make up for that. And, you need healthy fats to help absorb the fat soluble vitamins. I use olive oil and basalmic vinegar or lemon juice on salads more than any prepared dressing. Cheaper too.

Get foods with lots and lots of fiber. Fiber makes you feel fuller longer. Plus, fiber rich foods contain the nutrients needed to make a healthy baby and healthy pregnancy. Your body creates tons more free radicals while pregnant. You need a good balanced diet to neutralize those.

I am taking a series of classes taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition. I have LOTS of great info I can share to help. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. It is my mission to help others learn how to lead a healthier life with prevention of disease the end goal.

Good luck and be sure to feed that hunger with fresh, whole foods. In health, D.

I did the same thing and it will get better. I lived on Ensures.....it was fast and filling. Easy to get to in the middle of the night (kept in a small ice bucket by my bed).

Your body knows what you need.
