I Can't Run!

I have never been athletic, but have always been a mover. I have been hitting the gym twice a week and have an ellptical and treadmill at home. I can walk for miles either in parks or on a treadmill without a problem (in the nice weather, I was walking 6 miles). I have been doing 3 miles three times a week on the elliptical machine, but I can't run! Within a few minutes (1/4 mile or so) I start getting terrible cramps on the sides of my abdomen.
What causes that? Am I breathing wrong? That is all I can think of. I would love some tips to help me out, because I would love to bump up my activity level and add some variety with running.
Thanks.

What can I do next?

I think you may be breathing through your mouth instead of your nose.....

Ugh, I know, this happens to me too. What I have found makes a big difference is to not eat or drink anything for about an hour before your workout. Also, if I start getting a bad side stich I breath out all of my air through my mouth before I take another breath, kind of like making sure you get the last little bit of air out. Does that make sense? Good luck with increasing your workouts, that's awesome!

I think J. (as a runner) gave the best advice.

I'm not a natural runner, either. I had to learn to slow down (my instincts were to go too quickly initially which created a lot of breathing problems, stitches, and low endurance.

We, too, have a treadmill and an elliptical in the basement. I'm training for a half marathon, and I detest being on the treadmill. I'd rather do the elliptical any day.

What I haven't heard anyone recommend is finding a local running group. They usually embrace people just getting started and will teach you how to run and build-up your endurance. The training we're doing for our Mini is based upon a local company's (The Running Company) training program which includes novices.

I am a runner. But you need to build up your resistance. Keep running and just try and stretch yourself an extra 2 mins each time. it should get better. However if you are cramping, chances are you ate too late or you drank too much fluid. Try to limit your consumption until after you are done running. Also breathing is a big part. When I start to get cramps during running I start to sing whatever song is on my Ipod or if I forget my Ipod I start to since the ABC's until they go away. You can sing/talk quietly so noone can hear you.
Hope that helps
Good luck
