They said it couldn't be done, but I did it! I burnt water. Well, really it all boiled away and charred my stainless steel pan. Now it is all black on the inside. Any recommendations on how to get that black off my stainless steel pan? TIA.

haha---laffing at burnt water.
You did not burn water you reduced it until the minerals in the water stuck to the bottom. The water is all harmlessly floating around your house.
White vinegar breaks up mineral deposits. So soak it for at least 24 hours and then it should scrub right off.
Pampered Chef sells a stainless steel cleaner that works wonders (which you can get from pamperedchef.com or they also sell them at Bed Bath & Beyond. You've got some great ideas here to try first for free!
Lol, I did the same thing once. Only I burned the pot so bad it broke the weld.
HAHA I boiled the water out of a "porcelain on steel" tea pot one time. It got so hot it melted the glaze off the steel and onto the burner. When I found it glowing red I turned it off and let it cool. Well,,, it cooled the glaze and stuck the pot to the burner. We had to throw away both the pot and burner in one piece and buy a new burner for the stove.
oven cleaner will work.
I use a scrubber that is made out of stainless steel. It scrubs it pretty well. It's by the sponges and other scrub brushes at the grocery store.
There are non-bleach based powdered cleansers like Bon Ami or Barkeeper's Friend that also work well. I have the liquid Barkeeper's Friend for my stove top and find that works well on other surfaces like stainless steel also. It contains citric acid, so it works on those mineral deposits left behind by the water.
go to the cleaning section of your grocery store and find the right scrubber for stainless steel. I burnt rice at the bottom of my stainless steel one time. Went to the store and bought "Chore Boy" or something like that brand of scrubber made specifically for stainless steel. Scrubbed the pan with soap and water using the scrubber. Worked like a charm.
Use some comet and a sponge with a rough side that is dark green, it will take off the top reside then put hot water in it and let it get really hot, turn off the heat and let it sit until just warm, scrub it again, repeat.
The pan is useless if this doesn't work so it doesn't matter if you end up scrubbing too hard. But I have the newest looking stainless steel pans of everyone I know and I use comet each and every time I clean them.
I think they make specialized cleaners to return pans to like-new condition, but they might be pricey. Try soaking and scrubbing it, the black is probably from minerals in your water, so hopefully it can be scrubbed off. You might also try boiling more water in it to try to loosen the char (watch it this time;). Good luck, I would be so mad if I wrecked an expensive pan!
Scrub the pan with baking soda that what i did when that happened to me
