I Bought a Can of SPAM

"I bought a can of SPAM, what should I do with it?" This is the question I posted on Facebook over the weekend.

I got a few expected answers of "take it back" and "throw it away", but also mostly got "fry it and put some mustard on it".

I have never tried it and was wondering if anyone eats it and if so, how do they eat it and what is the recipe?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

How come everyone thinks its so cheap? It was $3 for a tiny can. If all 5 of us were to eat it as a full on meal I think I'd need 2 or 3 cans of it and I don't think that is cheap. Maybe I'm cheap for thinking $3 for a tiny can isn't cheap??!! This was mostly supposed to be a fun question, I don't really think I'm going to start having weekly Spam meals. =) Thanks mamas for the ideas. =)

My older daughter thought she was sheltered having never been offered Spam. She bought some and prepared it different ways. She doesn't feel like we did anything wrong keeping it from her anymore. :) It was quite awful.

dice it and put it in macaroni & cheese... add it to scrambled eggs... fry it and make "spamwiches" with it... cheese, mayo, spam and any other sandwich "toppings" on bread... mmmmm! anything yoy can do with sliced ham you can do with spam.

Hehehe, my MIL HATES spam with the fury of a thousand suns. My husband and I LOVE it! So as a joke we got her a can of spam for Christmas from "Santa"... so she had to pretend that it was just what she asked for hahahahahaha!

Cut up in bite size pieces, and scrambled into eggs is my fave, but since we ate it a lot when I was a kid (mom would fry it up with potatoes and onions) I only eat it about once a year. She would also sometimes slice it, heat it up and serve it instead of bacon or sausage with eggs and toast.

The guys in the family like it sliced, grilled, and as a sandwich in buns with lettuce, tomato, cheese and onions. My son likes it sliced and grilled as well, in a bun with grilled pineapple slices and some BBQ sauce.

And my brother who frequents Hawaii says it's served a lot there, it's considered a delicacy, so here's some Hawaiian Spam recipes:

when I was a kid we had no money (and I mean that literally) so we tended to have spam .. a lot. I can't eat the stuff now we had it so much when I was a kid.

However, the way it was best was exactly as they said, slice it, fry it up, stick it on a bun and add your favorite condiments. My mom also occassionally used it in scalloped potatoes or au gratin potatoes. Which was actually not to bad.

If I think of any other ways we had it when I was a kid I'll edit. But that's all I can think of for now.

When my husband lived in Hawaii he ate some kind of spam-rice-egg (I think?) dish and loved it, I guess it's very popular there! Try googling that and see what comes up :)

One day when my oldest son was about 15, he came home from a friends house raving about this delicious stuff that his friend fried and served him. He was IN LOVE! So I asked his friend's mom what it was, and after she managed to quit laughing hysterically informed me that it was spam! LOL!
To serve it, basically do anything with it that you would ham. It's mostly ham, kind of salty. cook into scrambled eggs, any potatoe dish, soup, etc. And now that my son is on his own, I don't buy it, no one else in my family likes it that I know of.

I don't thinks SPAM is cheap either. I only like the bacon flavor SPAM, and it's not easy to find. At least not where I live. When I can get it I slice it, fry it, and eat it with eggs for breakfast. And if you want a good laugh, go to YouTube and look up Monty Python/spam.

Spam actually does NOT have msg in it. You can't say that about any other processed meat. Anyway, my family is from Hawaii, where spam is a staple. You can order it at McDonalds there. I grew up eating it in scrambled eggs, in noodle soup, wrapped in rice and seaweed. We had it in fried slices as side to our toast and eggs, too.

I've eaten it once when camping. When you're really hungry, it's yummy! We ate it for breakfast, sliced thin like ham, sauteed on a pan. I'd probably scramble some eggs on the side and have some fruit too. I'd treat it kinda like bacon/ham.

When I went to Hawaii on for my honeymoon I thought it was SO funny that every resteraunt served spam!!! It was so weird! I think they mainly served it with eggs but I could be wrong, I never ordered it :o)

I received some Spam in a food pantry basket last year. I had never eaten it and was kinda' leery of the stuff.

I found a recipe for fried rice that gave me an idea. I used regular rice, carrots, onions, cilantro, bell peppers, whatever veggies I had on hand and canned pineapple. I cubed the Spam, browned it in the electric wok, threw in all the veggies, then the rice, and a fried rice seasoning packet. Added the pineapple at the end. It was really good - even my somewhat picky teen liked it.

Check out allrecipes.com - they have tons of Spam (or canned luncheon meat) recipes.

When I was growing up, my mom used to dice it, fry it, and combine it with scrambled eggs - or sometimes with macaroni and cheese. My husband likes it that way, too. He also makes Spam sandwiches with tomato and lettuce.

Spam is salty (so don't add any more), but you might try experimenting with herbs. The taste is somewhat bland so it needs a little extra something.

There are lots of Spam jokes, but it's good to have a can handy - it can come in useful once you know what you can do with it.

OMG spam is amazing! My husband is Hawaiian (stereotype, i know lol) and you can do a lot with it.. mostly we make spam musubi (sp may be off) make some rice, get some nori at the store (seaweed paper used for sushi) toast the nori in a skillet, slice the spam however thin you like and cook it, put a little mound of rice on top and wrap with the nori.. seriously amazing! I like to slice it about 1/4 inch thin and fry it up in a hot skillet till it's crispy on the outside. Its good with eggs for breakfast or great for a sandwich with mustard.
Spam is a comfort food. I have an empty can on my computer desk that I use to hold pencils. I dont eat it very often, but every now and then I get the spam craving. It's really salty, keep that in mind.
Also, you dont have to cook it, it's good sliced right from the can and on to a sandwich with tomato and miracle whip and a few shakes of black pepper.

Yummy! We actually are on vacation and just visited the Spam museum in Austin, Minnesota! One of the best things about spam is how many ways you can use it! Our favorite is to slice it and fry it (with cooking spray) and eat it with eggs! It's also good in pasta dishes like Macaroni and cheese. Go to spam.com for lots of other great recipes!

one of my fondest memories is having fried spam and scrambled egg sandwiches when I would spend the night at a friends house in grade school. her mom was an alcoholic and would make this for dinner before she passed out for the evening. miracle whip and mustard on white bread. dont add salt to the eggs. slice the spam very thin and dont over fry. yum.
