Hey mamas, 1 week from today I am going in to have my baby girl by csection,my last csection was emergency so I was just wondering what to expect. I go in the day before for my bloodwork. This is especially emotional for me because I am having her on my moms bday who passed away a few years ago. I feel as if Cali is a gift from God and my mother. So for those of you that have had planned csections...what do I have to look forward to? :-) thanks!

What can I do next?

With my first child I went in to be induced but ended up delivering by c-section. It was very scary for me and I hated the time away from my child before they brought her to me to try nursing. The second child I swore I'd asked for a cocktail to take the edge off and I got it. I choose to have my tubes tied after baby number 2 was delivered by c-section and the "cocktail" knocked me out until I was woken up to nurse my baby. I seemed to be in a lot more pain with baby 2 but I'm not sure if it was gas due to sleepy digestive system or having the tubes tied. I'm just glad I won't be having any more deliveries!

Things to expect:
• No food after midnight (the night before)
• IV and fetal monitoring before surgery
• Pubic area shaved (the nurses are not gentle consider shaving or waxing before)
• In O. R. - you'll receive a spinal block you'll feel something like a bee sting, it's not bad at all. Within a few minutes you'll start to feel your legs getting heavy...
• While the nurses prep you for surgery (benedine (sp?) on the belly, insert catheter etc. someone will be putting up a curtain and tethering your arms
• Doctor may talk you through the process and you'll feel a lot of pressure and tugs but no pain and delivery is quick - look forward to those first baby cries!
• Baby is cleaned up and you get a quick look in the O. R. before baby is taken to the nursery for full bath and work-up... dad gets to attend to the baby through this process while mom gets stitched up.

Post Delivery:
• Tremors from epidural wearing off
• Delayed first visit with baby

Good luck with your delivery! I received wonderful care at HEB in Bedford, TX.

I've had 3 c-sections, 1st was planned because she was breach (but she came earlier), 2nd was twins supposed to be VBAC but had failure to dilate and last one was planned but ended an emergency (I went into labor and fully dilated in under 90 minutes) This caused baby to have severe decels. All of them came early though. If they give you the option I highly recommend a spinal over an epi anyday. I didn't feel as much during, felt better afterwards and had an easier & quicker recovery. The nice thing about being planned is family can come in if needed, you already have your older child taken care of, you can take your time packing what you need and getting the house in order in time.

Congrats on the upcoming baby girl and what a wonderful day to have her on : ) My last one we found out we were pregnant on my moms bday and he was born on the day my hubby and I met in Jr high!

I had my second child by a planned c-section and it was a breeze. I was a little nervous at first because my first child was delivered vaginally so I had no idea what to expect. I think it was the calmest, easiest and non stressful delivery. You will do great and a what a wonderful blessing from God a little girl born on your mothers b-day. Just remember the goal to have a safe a healthy delivery so try not to stress yourself out to much.

I agree with Cindy! I did not have a c-section but my sister did with both of her kids. The first was emergency and the second was planned. She said the second was easier and less stressful because it was planned.

Relax, pray and be joyful! Congrats on your new blessing to come!

I have had two c-sections. One unplanned and one planned. The planned one was better. With the first one I had an epidural and the second I had a spinal block. With the epidural you can feel a whole lot more, but the spinal block was great. Try to get up and walk around as soon as possible. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

Hi C.,

A planned C-Section is much easier than an emergency one, I had an unexpected C-Section with my first and a planned one with my second. You will go in and they will shave you, the anesthesiologist will come and visit with you, then when its time you go to the OR, you get your spinal block (anesthetic) and then have the C-Section. Its a little nerve wrecking because you know you will be in surgery but its also very organized and planned. I had a pannic attack with my second when I was waiting to go to the OR because I started to remember my first that was so traumatic after 30 hours of labor, but my second was a breeze and also much faster to heal and a lot less pain afterwards because I never had contractions. My advice is to relax, try your best to meditate in God and your other child, as long as you have peace it should go by fast. Bless you!
