As I have said before, my 9 year old son is INTO, and I mean to the exclusion of every other thing, into Thomas the train. Any game you play, or conversation you have, will be made into a Thomas game. He likes lego, but makes trains, he likes to ride bikes, but he is a train, he talks trains, you get the picture. I would love to find him an equally obsessed friend, about the same age, its hard, because most boys his age are not into trains - So if anyone knows anyone in my area, or someone who would like to email back and forth with him let me know!

What can I do next?

Maybe...just maybe he is taking this a bit too far....he needs to be I guess what you would say is " well rounded"...meaning having more than one interest. This can evolve into isolation. Not good by any means....and in my opinion...by 4yo...he should be into other things. My grandson is 9....he knows all electronics inside and out to include iphone...ipad...cameras....computers...also chess...basketball...soccer...and his dog...what do you think??? Agree or not?

I don't mean to be insensitive, but have you had your son tested for autism or other learning or cognitive disorder? While kids are often completely obsessed by topics (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Planes, Trains, Automobiles, etc), by 9years old, they should be broadening their horizons. I would be concerned if this were my child.

Just something to consider.

that is awesome! my grandfather drove a train. i wonder if any conductors would be willing to write him or send him fun stuff? hope he finds someone...my son is four and is obsessed with sharks! thanks to the movie "shark boy and lava girl" - he was that for halloween and his party was the theme (sister was lava girl/joint party). I was obsessed with barbies till about 13yrs old. It was hard to find friends that liked them too at that age...even 10 yrs old did not want to play barbie anymore. Sims took there place. I would spread his world of trains to mining and travel by train, eco factors of traveling/shipping by trains. Education mixed in there not just pretending trains. Helocopters and ships might intreast him too? Its hard being friends with a person when they are obsessed with one thing. Even if his pen pal isnt into trains but likes dinos they can still discuss each others intreasts.

*** I read the other responces and while if you do think he has issues have him tested by all means. But I know 9 yr olds that are into mainly one form of play. Like one neighbor is all about hunting/fishing he is a little cave man, the other kid also 9 is into base ball, another little girl 9 yrs is into acting and has been for as long as she played dress up. They will play other things but it is there main source of play. It sounds normal to me***

You did not give this information but as a teacher for children on the autism spectrum I just wondered if your child had been identified with Asperger's?
High IQ and fixating on certain subjects to the exclusion of all others is one of the identifiers. He needs to be evaulated if he has not been. It would explain so many things.
