I Am Going in for a D&C Next Week-questions!!!

Dont worry, it is not bad at all. I had one for a non-thriving pregnancy and it was a sad experience but that was it. I woke up and we bleeding like a period and just felt like I was on my period. I took a couple days off work, more for mental rest. It is no big deal and everything will be fine!

I had to have one after giving birth to my daughter because of bad bleeding.. It wasn't bad at all.. They put me to sleep and when I woke up it was just some cramping, for a day or 2. The bleeding continued, but slowed down a lot, then stopped. It wasn't bad at all.

I had one about 3 years ago due to a miscarriage. The recovery was nothing. After I left the hospital, I was so hungry from not being able to eat that my husband and I went out for dinner! I don't remember any cramping, but if I did have any, it wasn't anything bad! Good luck to you!

I've had two d&c's in the past two years because of abnormal heaving bleeding (nonstop). It really isn't anything - the first one I had no cramping, the second one I had mild cramping. I continued to bleed for about 10 days afterward but nothing like I was experiencing beforehand.

I had a D&C about 15 years ago and the only bad thing about the recovery was the vomiting I had after waking up from the D&C. I never had any problems after my D&C and never had another D&C to date. With all the meds pumped into me to put me under, it upset my stomach. So, just in case, make sure the hospital staff gives you a barf bag. The cramping only lasted for about 2 days and it wasn't bad. Just make sure you have Tylenol on hand.

L., I had a D&C 12 years ago. I was pregnant and the baby stopped developing very early in the pregnancy. When I went for my first 8 week appt. the Dr. discovered it. It was treated as a miscarraige and I could either have the D&C or I could wait to miscarry at home. I opted for the first choice. Any surgery is scarey but in my case it was no big deal. I don't think I even had any cramping. Losing a first baby was hard. I went to the first appt. happily thinking I as preggy, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. I went on to have three babies after that. You'll be fine. Just take it easy that first day or so. Good Luck!

I've had 3 D&C's. I had almost no cramping at all and the recovery time was just about an hour or two - if any! Frankly, the worst part of the whole thing was the 'not getting to eat' part. If you do get cramps, nice hot lemon tea is great.

(I think going to the dentist is much worse :) )

I had one in december for a miscarriage. Other than dealing with the hardship of that, it was fine. I hardly had any cramping. Almost like I was never put under.

I would ask why your doctor is recommending a D&C over a endometrial ablation? I am considering a novasure endometrial ablation (I am done having kids) but am getting my thyroid and hormone levels checked to make sure that it isn't a thyroid problem or related to perimenopause. Both of those can cause irregular periods and many other syptoms. I think with a D&C you can still have kids though, and with teh ablation, you shouldn't be wanting any more, as it is more permanent.

I had a D&C after giving birth to my daughter. About a week or so after... It was afterbirth that didn't come out. Now I had some mild cramping after, but nothing major... In and Out pretty much. But with any surgery where you are put completley under it's a risk!

I had a misscarraige and had to have a D&C at the hospital it was several intense days of cramps afterwards and heavy bleeding and clotting.
But if it fixes a problem it might be worth it yes?

My D&C was pretty much a non-event except for having to disrupt my day to go to the hospital and the ensuing routine. Turned out I had a polyp in my uterus that might have been causing my frequent periods! Can't even recall if I had cramping or not! Everyone is different, as I'm sure you've heard before! Good luck!

Hi, since I speak from experience, the advice that has been given to you about mild cramping and spotting was accurate for me. A D&C is the scrapping of the uterine lining and is considered "routine" but all surgery have some risk. Be sure that your Dr.is a Board Certified OB/GYN or General Surgeon.You don't mention your age but as I entered my 30's I noticed more difficult periods that continued to spiral nearly out of control. The D&C didn't help.(From my own research, I believe having a tubal ligation after my second child, while in my 20's, contributed to the problem) Any type of IUD will increase your bleeding. Birth control is a choice you need to discuss with your medical care provider. I hope for the very best for you this week. Denise.

I have had 2 d&c's before, they were both a long time ago, but I can remember that I did have some cramping for a couple of days, Most recently Dec 2007 I had a proceedure called Novasure, it was done outpatient at beaumont and i had some cramping afterwards for a couple of hours but in the afternoon(same day) I felt no pain and since then I have not had one period. I am 45 years old and I was tired all the time from having really heavy periods and alot of clots and cramping, since then I have not been anemic at all. I had a tubal ligation with my last child 11 years ago, so I didn't have to worry about birth control, so this option was better than a d&c for me because I no longer have any periods. Has your GYN offered any other options besides a D&C... sonohystergram? ablation? Recovery time is two days for a D&C.

Good luck next week. I have just had my third D&C. The first one was for heavy bleeding also. The last two were for miscarriages. The first one I had no recovery problems. I could have worked the day after. The second one was about the same. This last one was not as good but I think it was because I was 12 1/2 weeks pregnant so it might have been a little more involved. I wouldn't worry but do know that you can not swim, wear tampons,or have intercourse for two weeks after. You will need someone to drive you home, and you will sleep a lot the day of and possibly the after. Make sure to stock up on some think pads. Good Luck and don't worry everything will be fine.

I had one 8 years ago due to a miscarriage, and I never had any issues afterwards. I had no discompfort or cramping. I mean everyone is different, so everyone will react differently. I would make sure that you ask questions that put your mind at ease. Ask the doctor the same question you just posted, what are the side effects, what can I expect the next day or so. Have them tell exactly what is going to take place, that way you have a better understanding of what to expect.

In my experiences, I have had 2 D & C's (miscarriages), The physical symptoms were very minimal. I Bled for a few days and cramping, not horrible, but I did take motrin. I felt the procedure was simple and quick. I felt physically fine going home. I took iteasy for a couple of days, I did lay around and vegged out. I hope this works for you! Have you looked into Marina IUD, there is a little hormone in that too- I am not sure if it associated with stroke or not? I just had the Copper IUD, so far it has been good. The beginning was rough but 2 months in and I am doing much better! I hope this helps. I always try to stay relaxed, and that usually helps with any recovery. Best wishes and better health!
