I had a full hysterectomy in July 2007 and now I'm beginningto experience hot flashes and night sweats. My OBGYN prescribed Premarin. I used it for 2 weeks and began to feel lethargic, fatigued, had a consistent headache, and my feet swelled. Needless to say, I stopped the Premarin. My question is - has anyone else experienced night sweats and hot flashes and what have you done about it?

A. I feel for you. I had a hyst. almost 11 years ago then had my ovaries removed about 2 years ago. The dr put me on premarin and then switched me to estratest. I still had hot flashes and night sweats and all the other problems associated with menopause. I saw no reason to continue taking meds what were not doing anything for me. So I stopped taking them. Although I have learned to live with it the night sweats are probably the worse but I have found if I can sleep with out any pj's I sleep alot better. Also avoiding caffenie and sugar's through out the day help with night sweats and hot flashes. I have had some of the older women tell me that the topical creams and some of the over the counter meds help but I haven't tried any of them. Hope you get to feeling better and something helps you.

A., I had a full hysterectomny at 28. Am 52 now. I used Premairn for years, until I found out it is made from a pregnant female horse urine and is very inhumane. I take Estridol now, you should ask your dr. about that. I love it, works great!

The best thing you did was to stop the Premarin . I had a hysterectomy a fews years ago and have experenced the same hot flashes and night sweats. Keep cold water with ice at your bed side . And keep a small fan there also . During the day drink a tea call Cat's Claw. Read about it.It works

I assume when you say FULL hysterectomy that you mean ovaries too. If so, your body goes into immediate menopause because no hormones are produced. I'm surprised the Dr didn't start you on some kind of hormones immediately, instead of waiting 1 year. At your age, you need the hormones, and there are many kinds they can try, and many dosages. Go back to your Dr and get them to try something else for you. Not treating it can affect many things, including your mood, sex drive, ability to absorb calcium, etc...

I am a firm believer in letting your body go through it's natural cycles. My Mom has had great luck with Estroven (it's a plant estrogen.) Although it does not alleviate symptoms totally, it has helped a great deal in the severity. Good luck to you and sleep naked, your kids are old enough to know to knock before entering.

I am assuming that when you say "full hysterectomy" you mean that they took your ovaries as well. In that case you are going through menopause. So you will have all of the side effects of menopause. Hot flashes, night sweats, mood instability. There's over the counter meds like estroven that can help curb some of those side effects.

I had a full hysterectormy in June of 2001 at the age of 32. I experienced the same thing with the side effects of the Premarin, my OBGYN had to adjust the dosage. I am still on Premarin after 8 years and have NO problems with it. Be in constant communication with your physician and he can adjust. I lost a lot of weight 4 years ago and the dosage had to be adjusted again. I am fine now and have no issues.
Good Luck!

Hi A. - I have experienced the night sweats and hot flashes. Awful! I am on Prempro and it seems to work (not completely) but it definitely cut down on them. I was having them all day long. Sometimes I get up and put water on my face, arms and legs and get back in bed (I'm sure you have done that) and it seems to help. I guess the one thing that has helped the most is the Prempro. My sister wears a Prempro patch and loves it - she said it has taken away all her symptoms so that is another option!

Good Luck!

Dear A.,
I am a 38yr old mother of four. In June of 2005 I had to have a complete hysterectomy. I have been on premarin for about two years. Guess what. I am having a hot flash as I type. The night swets, hot flashes, and irritability has not gone away yet. Although. I did stop taking the premarin for about three weeks. On the last week of not taking it, I broke down crying for about 24hrs. I went to my dr and he said. C., you can not stop taking a hormone replacement. You don't have any way to produce your own hormones any more. So I started taking it again. I have tried over the counter remedies, zink, and another hormone from the Dr. and nothing has stopped the night swets and the hot flashes. I hate it. My husband doesn't understand why I can't stand for him to sleep up against me at night. He says I freeze him out. We put the AC on 70 plus I have a fan on high blowing on me. I use to have two fans. I thought I would give him a break. Well, If you find another remedy that works, please let me know.
Thanks C.

I use a natural Hormone cream that may help you. After my mom had cancer, we tried to go as natural as we could and she needed some relief from Menopause w/o taking prescribed hormones. We both use the cream from Arbonne and had tremendous results. So good, in fact, I found a consultant and signed up so I could get it at a discount, learn more about it and share it with women in my family. Call me if you want information. or look up www.Arbonne.com and read about it.

Do some reserch before taking anything else. Try to find something that is bioidentical. I have been on Estrace (Estradiol-generic) since I had my hyster 5 years ago and have never had a hotflash or any of the major side effects. An endocronologist is a good place to start. They often have more info on HRT than the gynos do. Good luck!!

A.,
I really feel for you because I have had several hormone issues all my life so I know what you are going thru. I'm 49 and have been considered post menapausal three times!! LOL! I haven't had a hysterectomy but I have malfunctioning hormones that drive me crazy.

My mom was a HEAVY user of premarin all during menopause and in her 60s she needed a hysterectomy and did a little premarin then too but got off of it because it didn't mix well with her other medications. Anyway, now at 80 she has breast cancer. We have absoluely no history in the family of any female having breast cancer and she's been told that her use of premarin could have triggered it. Not sure how true that statement is because I have not researched it.

But I do know that I had had one doctor suggest premarin to me several years ago but I flat out refused. First, there is something about taking PREgnant MARe (horse) urINe that turned me off and secondly, it is in most cases inhumanely obtained from the horses! Ick! I would just rather suffer thru the hot flashes and sweats than take that!

It wasn't until I became an Arbonne Consultant that I found a hormone balancing cream that had the black cohash and other ingredients that have helped me from hot flashing and night sweats.

If you would like to know more about it please fell free to contact me or you can find links from my webpage to Arbonne.

My mom had a hysterectomy a few years ago and her OB advised her that it would push her into early menopause, but that she would go through it much quicker than regular menopause. So you may be experiencing symptoms that seem severe, which they are, but hopefully they should pass soon!

There are some natural remedies on the market, like Estroven, that can help with the night sweats, but I would suggest to talk to your doctor. There may be other hormone replacement therapies that you can try besides premarin.

There is some great info on Web MD too:

I just went through the same thing and my physician prescribed Cymbalta because I can not take hormone treatments. While this is a low-dose anti-depressant, it has helped all the symptoms I was having... the night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings, etc. To me, it has been a miracle drug. I have been taking it for less than six months and Im feeling terrific now! Good luck with your situation.

Hi A.,
The best thing I have found for hot flashes is Black Cohosh Root. You can buy it at Wal Mart and it cost about $4.00. I also went to the Doctor and he gave me hormones. After a week I threw them away. I tried the other over the counter pills like Estroven and nothing worked as well as the Black Cohosh Root. The added bonus is that it is all natural.I hope this info helps.

Hi I am also one that has had a full Hystro. I never got on the med's because my doctor said that he only wanted to prescribe them if I really needed them. I am now 29 and had the surgery when I was 28. I had hot flashes and night sweats for a couple months and would just go take a cool bath or sip some ice water. Also invested in a fan to put beside my bed for extra air at night. After a while they just went away and now theres only a couple times a month to where I feel the sweats or flashes coming on and I just go get in the bath and relax for a little bit. I hope this helps you if not I would go to the doctors and let him know what you are experiancing to see if he can lower your meds or if there are other kinds that would better suite your body.

I have never had an hysteretomy, but experienced night sweats and hot flashes. Was told by my physician, that I was probably going into early menapause, and this could happen for up to 8 years. They have discontinued at this time. But I am sure they will return.
