Hello Mamas!

I am hoping some of you can help me out. I just got my test results and I am on the border of having a hypothyroid. My doctor wants to prescibe medicine that I will have to take daily. I was just wondering if any of you mamas have been able to control your thyroid naturally? Are there any supplements out there that work the same way?

Just looking for alternatives or suggestions before I fill my prescription.

Thanks for your insight!
J.

I take synthroid every day. 112 mg. I feel so much better! I can always tell when it gets out of whack because I get out of whack. Its amazing what one little pill can do.

I'm on 100mg of Levothyroxine every day (generic Synthroid, I've never had a problem with it).

My guess is that you're not yet experiecing the full "joy" of being completely hypo. This isn't one that I would play around with to skip meds.
Once the symptoms kick in (and it can take a long time), you can have any number of things. For me: racing heartbeat, fatigue, headaches, hair falling out and weight gain. The hardest was the fatigue. You just can't kick it.

So please, go with the meds for this one and do yourself a favor.
You can play around with iodine levels to see if that helps, but I've never head of anyone that's successfully dealt with true thyroid disease naturally.

I've been hypothyroid for 18 years.
I started taking Synthroid but switched to Armour Thyroid about 10 years ago and it works better for me.
I have friends who do fine on Synthroid - different people do well on different medications.

There are no side effects. Look up the effects of having a low thyroid because you will be shocked how it effects you. For me, I would have breakouts, rashes under my ring finger, forgetfullness, and would get angry really easily. I take 75 mg of Levothyaxin, they Syntroid generic and it is great. Even my midwife takes it and she is all about being natural.

I started on Synthroid years ago b/c I was borderline hypo and trying to get pregnant -- thyroid affects fertility. It's not a big deal to take one little, inexpensive pill a day, but I've since talked with my endocrinologist and it seems I can be weaned off if I want. Also, my acupuncturist said acupuncture/herbs can help wean or keep you from having to go on meds at all. I know of someone who went this route with success. I never really looked into it because I didn't want to mess around with fertility/pregnancy, but if you are not pregnant or trying to get pregnant, I'd certainly look into alternative, holistic methods of improving your thyroid function. Diet, herbs & exercise can help.

I personally take levothyroxine daily. My endo and I have been working with the dose for a while, but mine is autoimmune. I have no thyroid function at all anymore. Other options were kind of out for me. Once I started taking it it was a drastic difference! I wasn't as mean and cranky, I had more energy, and I was all around nicer.
I know people who were taking iodine, but now when I ask them how they are doing they avoid the topic, so I don't know if it stopped working for them and didn't want to admit they had to start taking medication or not. I have heard of people that it has worked well for, but I don't know them personally.

My natural dr had suggested trying to take Iodine tablets. Iodine supports the thyroid. We didn't check my thyroid, and once taking the iodine for awhile, I realized I didn't need it, but it gave me all the side effects of hyperthyroidism after taking it for about a month, so if you are just a bit off, this may be enough for you and very cheap. I took the NOW brand of it.

I take a VERY low dosage of synthroid every day because like you I am a borderline. However, I have researched being able to get off of the medications and it is possible, especially if you are only borderline now. You may need to find a doctor with a more holistic approach though. Also, there are some more "naturally" derived medications like Armour which you could try first instead. But, do realize that if you want to work towards it, it will take time and is not guaranteed. I have been on my meds for almost two years now and everytime I try to wean off, I experience noticeable differences in my fatigue levels almost immediately.
