Hi, my son had a hypospadius surgery when he was 6 months old. He is now 6 and every so often his urine sprays out or drips while he urinates. It doesn't hurt but it does bother him because it goes on his clothes. The doctor said it's because his hole is too small which could happen from having that surgery and needs to have surgery to make it bigger. Has anyone ever had this issue before with their child after having a hypospadius surgery?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's comments they have been helpful. I don't know what a fistula is and how do I know my son doesn't have that also? What are the symptoms? We see the specialist on the 18th.

My 5 1/2 year old had the surgery when he was 10 months old. We have been very fortunate to not notice any complications, though his pediatrician makes sure to "check" him every visit.

I do remember the surgeon mentioning those types of complications and that they can occur. If there is something that needs to be corrected, I would do it as soon as possible. If he's embarrassed now, he will be more so as he gets older.

Talk to his surgeon. If you're not completely confident, get a second opinion. But do it soon. Definitely get answers soon.

FYI - Hypospadias means the pee hole is in the wrong place. It can be further down the shaft and can be potentially very, very messy and extremely embarrassing. If he's had the surgery, the doctor has moved the hole (and rebuilt the urethra).

Welcome to mamapedia!!

Neither of my boys had this issue. I would assume that when they did the surgery, the urethra was "opened" up.

I would go back to the urologist who performed the surgery and ask him/her about it. If you don't like the answer? Seek a second opinion.

Good luck!

My son had the surgery to correct the hypospadius, but we haven't had that same issue. Are you seeing the same surgeon who did your son's surgery? Maybe get a second opinion, if you can? Or, do you feel comfortable with his recommendation? Sounds like the surgery itself is not as extensive as the hypospadius surgery. At least that's what I would assume.

My suggestion is to keep asking questions. Maybe google to see if anyone else has had that same experience?

My son had same surgery when he was 9 month old, after that it developed fistula so he had another repair, after that surgery he had hole shrinking and we had 2 more times surgery to make hole bigger, now he is doing fine, but we still keep an eye, my doctor told that some kids body has tendancy to regrow the tissue and cover the newly created hole, we are hoping he should be done with surgery and no more to go.
