So What Happened?

Thanks so much to all who replied-My husband and I read all of the responses and our anxiety level was much lower after the reassuring messages you all sent. His surgery went well and we are all recovering at home today! He is toddling around like a happy drunk with no obvious pain. I can't tell you how much less stress we had going into surgery due solely to this wonderful resource! Thanks again Mamas!

my now almost seven year old son had this done about about 8 months...if i rmember correctly...it's hard to remember but i know he was under 1 year. The doctor spotted it at birth and stopped the circ. We had it done at dallas Childrens and it was great there! very wonderful place to take your kiddo. i was a wreck!!! though they assured me it was easy i just was so upset. anyway, he was really not bad and as it turned out the surgeon said his hypospadia was so mild he could have gone without the repair...i'm not sure they really even did much since the opening was there at the tip but just slightly off. so, when i say that he recovered quickly and easily it may to translate to your experience if your son has a more severe case. one thing though is that as our son came out of the drugs he was very upset--crying and disoriented. they said that was normal. i was so worried about him hurting himself, but he was fine. good luck!

My youngest son, who is now 8, had to have the same procedure. He actually had to have it twice. The 1st doctor didn't do it correctly and over time the original opening opened back up. So we went in for a 2nd procedure with a different doctor who did an excellent job!!! I won't sugar coat it... it was painful for him. Not the surgery itself, but the recovery. Luckily that area heals really quickly. Everytime he would urinate, he looked like he was having full body convulsions because it burned. And I felt so helpless because there was nothing I could do except tell him it would stop hurting soon. Which was hard for an 18 month old to understand. But as soon as he was done going to the bathroom, he was fine. All in all, the 1st week was the hardest. By the 2nd week, he was back to normal. Don't mean to scare you, but it's better to know up front! You might ask the doctor if there is some kind of numbing topical you can use for the 1st week. Hope this helps!! Kim

M.,
My son had this procedure when he was 5mo. old. I was very nervous about, cried a lot, and searched in many places for what to expect prior to his surgery. His surgery lasted for 2hrs, which seemed to last a lifetime. When he came from surgery his site was covered with gauze. He didn't seem to have any pain right after surgery. When we went back to the urologist office a few days later to have the gauze removed I was not prepared for what I saw. He was very bruised looking, but still had no complaints. The doctor told me that he may have some bladder spasms after the removal of the tube. He did have them on the way home, and I had to give him medication a couple of times. He is now 6yrs old. All my worry was for nought, because it all worked out much better than what I had expected. I pray that God will surround you with peace that only He can give, and will be with your little angel as he goes through this procedure. S.

One of my boys had this procedure when he was six months old. He was very uncomfortable the rest of that day and slept a lot for a couple of days but didn't seem to be in to much pain. I did notice that he was a little more reluctant to do physical things for awhile after the surgery not sure if that was from the procedure or anesthia or maybe unrelated all together. Also, I think it looks worse than it is for a few days. Everyhting healed up fine and now a year and a half later we haven't seen any long term issues. With your son being a little older it may be harder on him for the first day or two but I would guess he would bounce back quicker from it.

My son had his procedure when he was 3 months old (so he wouldn't have to spend the night in the hospital, he could've had it earlier). He had a relatively mild case. We went to Cook Children's in Fort Worth. Everyone explains what they are going to do and I found the pre-op to be very helpful. It is still nerve-wracking, mostly the recovery. My son's spinal block did not take or ended up numbing the wrong area because he woke up screaming in pain. They immediately gave him meds in the IV and he slept most of the day. I only needed to give him the med a little the next day and he was fine. He was able to have a partial circumcision at the hospital because he case was mild and didn't need much leftover skin, so the after care was very similar to that of his circumcision. He didn't have any tubes, just a clear bandage that looked like scotch tape. We were able to take it off in a couple of days. The weird part is seeing the stitches before it dissolves, it looks painful. But he was back to normal in about a week. I think it really affected my husband too - he really sympathized with him and kept reminding him that I was the one who let the doc do it, lol! Just make sure you ask all the questions you can think of and make sure you stay at ease. The more you know and understand, the better you'll feel. Good luck!

My little boy had his hypospadia repaired and he had to be recircumised when he was a little over 1. He was given pain medication, but we did not have to use it for very long. We applied vaseline to keep it from sticking to his diaper. Overall he did fine and everything turn out well.

My son had this procedure done and it was a piece of cake. The day he had it done, he did sleep a lot. It was nerve-wracking for me thinking about my little boy having surgery. But for him it wasn't a big deal. I kind of waited til he was a little older, he was 9 months, at the recommendation of my pediatrician. For us it wasn't a big deal at all.

Hi M.,
I had to have this done with my youngest, his was pretty bad with the opening going about ¾ of the way up the shaft. His recovery seemed short, our pediatrician spotted this at birth so didn’t perform a circumcision. They did this all at the same time when he was 6 months old so that the extra skin could be used to repair the hypospadia.

His procedure was at Cooks Children’s in Fort Worth. He went under general anesthesia (which is just nerve-racking) but we met the anesthesiologist and he was very kind to explain what he would be doing. They also gave him a spinal block (which I though was very interesting), our Urologist said that the recovery time can be shortened by up to 50% if they never feel or remember the initial cut… mind game.

The procedure took about an hour and he was in recovery for about an hour. They gave us pain medication and Lantibiotic which also numbs the area. He was feeling good after a week and was as good as new in about 3 weeks. His opening is still a little bit shifted towards the underside which is ok now while he still pee pees sitting down so I will have to teach him how to stand without getting all wet :-)

Good luck, I will say a prayer for your son! He will do great I am sure.
