Hyperthyroidism?

Ladies, this may be long, sorry. but, I need your help/advice.
Since my baby was about 11 months old (past 5 months), I have been extrememly moody, my pms has gotten WAY bad, my flow is heavier and longer, I am extrememly exhausted/fatigued nonstop, even though I get 7-9 hours of sleep every night+a nap, and I am seeking help! I have been to the doctor who put me on anti-depressants after my bloodwork was normal. I had been trying to gain some weight, and he thought that on top of my depression, the meds may help me gain. I am up to 99.5 lbs, but not getting any heavier than that despite a constant hunger and I eat all day long. I got off the anti-depressants about 2 months ago, and since then, things have gotten WAY worse! My husband makes fun of me and tells me that I am just self diagnosing myself with hyperthyroidism and that I just need more sleep and to eat more. lol! Any opinions? I have been to the doc 4 times in the last few months and I hate to seem like a hypocondriac, so I am asking you guys first. What do you think?

You do need to make sure they run all the thyroid tests - Free T3, Free T4 (they MUST run Frees and not Totals, as the Free is what's bioavailable), TSH, anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (anti-TG) and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO). You should get copies of all the tests they have run and not just accept "normal" - you need to know where you are in the ranges and exactly what tests they ran. If they only ran TSH, that is useless, since TSH is a pitutitary hormone and doesn't reflect thyroid function - it reflects feedback (levels of Free T3 and Free T4) from the thyroid, but doesn't tell you what your thyroid is really doing, in particular if you have antibodies.

The inability to gain weight is a sign of hyperthyroidism, but it's also a sign of diabetes. And, if the doctors won't run the right tests, you can get them run yourself from a variety of reputable online resources that use local Quest and Labcorp locations for the blood draw.

And, if they are abnormal join the Texas Thyroid Yahoo group to find a good doctor:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Texas_Thyroid_Groups/

You do also have another problem if your husband is making fun of you - it's really not acceptable IMHO for a husband to not take his wife's concerns about her health seriously - honestly, he should be helping you with the problem and not mocking you.

Sounds like you have a lot going on! I will tell you that while I haven't gone through everything you have, I sought out an herbalist and she has me on an adrenal cleanse which has helped my mood swings more than I ever thought possible. I was also exhausted and am always on the run so I eat constantly...I started drinking MonaVie Juice in October and that gives me such natural energy and helps in many other ways, that that on top of the herbs, my life is so much better!

If you'd like my herbalists number shoot me an email!

Just go in for a complete thyroid panel. It may not be that.... you may have something else going on. So maybe a complete blood panel would be the thing to do.

Even your email sounds kind of hyperactive, so you should get a complete physical and go from there.

keep following your instincts. docs don't always take in the total picture of a woman's experience. cliche as it sounds, no one knows your body better than you. I was persistent and finally met a doctor who thought my weight gain of 14 pounds in one month (taking me away from the same weight I had been for the past 8 yrs except when prego) was not normal - duh! I have hypothyroidism from a bad thyroid that was radiated when I had cancer 8 yrs. ago. once he diagnosed it, we were prego within a week of taking the right dose of armour thyroid (tried for over a year before that).

Other than the weight issue, all other things you mention sound like low progesterone to me. I am hosting a seminar with my beloved ob/gyn next sat, march 7 in Carrollton, TX that may fill in some info for you.

You're not crazy! You want to be here for your kid for as long as possible. Don't give up!!

If you would like a flyer, or just someone to say you're not crazy, email me! ____@____.com

Instead of going back to your regular doctor, see an endocrinologist. Whatever it is, I would think it is surely hormonal. You need a specialist to help figure out what's going on. Best wishes.
