has anyone has postpartum hyperthyroiditis? if so what treatment did you get or did it resolve on it's own?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

my thyroid was "hyper" for about 2months then it went to hypo for about a month. now it's in normal range and it's been about a month. i still have another test to take to make sure in a couple of weeks. i took herbal supplements to help this problem although my dr thinks it would have resolved on it's own anyway i think it's back to normal for now. thank you very much to everyone who responded.

T.,
I was just diagnosed with the same problem. I am getting ready to go see an Endocranologist. I have always had an over active thyroid, but it is affecting my health so much since having my third child. She is only 2-months-old, but feel miserable. Have you seen a doctor about treatment? I am hoping to get to feeling better soon. Let me know what you find out.

Hi T.,
The endocrinologist said I had Grave's disease 3mos after my daughter was born. She wanted me to have the radiation therapy but I refused because I really wanted to continue nursing for a while longer. So they put me on propylthiouracil (PTU), there are two antithyroid drug and this is the one prefered for breastfeeding mothers. It is widely accepted but you would need to check with your pediatrician and make sure it is alright if you take it. It does pass a little bit into the milk. So they advise that you take it as far away from feedings as possible. After a few months it seemed that the dose was too high so they lowered it slowly and now I am actually off of it. The dr also decided that it was probably a postpartum thing and not really graves disease after all, so I am glad that I didn't have the radiation. In total, I started the PTU when my baby was 4mos and by 9mos I was off of the medication.
Hopefully yours will go as smoothly, please feel free ask me any more questions - R.

I dont have Hyperthyroiditis, (which is over active thyproid basically), but mine was slower (Hypo)... My doctor gave me Synthroid, and I have been taking the generic form, my last blood work results, my thyroid was normal, after only 1 month of taking it. Hope that helps in some way ;o)

Hi T.. There are two kinds of this. The one that makes you fat, and makes it hard to lose weight, and then there's the one that makes you skinny and you can't gain wait. I've got the fat one and I have been on my medication for about 1 1/2 years. My thyroid is finally starting to regulate itself, and I excerice constantly to help me lose some of the weight I've gained. So far, I haven't lost more than 10 pounds but it's a start. The medication I'm on is called Tapazol. (It's generic). It takes at least a few months of reguarly taking your medicince before you can even think about results. Write me if you want to talk more. Best wishes, T.

Hi T.

I had the same thing after my 3rd child. I was monitored regularly and it just worked itself out. I was never put on medication although, they did this one test determining I will always be proned to have a thyroid condition. 3 years later and I am still fine. (knock on wood)

Hopefully yours will just go away as well.
