Hyperstimulation?

I am going through an ivf cycle and I am on day 8. My estrodiol (estrogen) level is 5969. They had me do my trigger shot tonight for retrieval Thursday morning. They had me do a smaller dose of the HCG because my estrogen levels are so high. The nurse said I am at greater risk of having hyperstimulation. Some of the stuff I read on the internet said that some REs will cancel a cycle if the estrogen is over 5000. I read another place that a cycle may not be canceled in older women with this high an estrogen level. I am 38 years old. I have about 8 follicles that are the right size now. I am a little bloated now but not too bad. Does anyone have any insight or has anyone gone through anything similar? I so want this to go forward and work but I am getting worried.

What can I do next?

I was borderline hyperstimulated myself during treatment. My friend was hyperstimulated during hers. They did the retrieval but waited a month to do the transfer. I know it heartbreaking to wait a month, but it's the safest option. If you transfer and the embryo/s stick your estrogen level will really start to sky rocket and you can end up in the hospital, very ill. Usually the pregnancy is ok during this time but you may face hospitalizations and having to get your stomach drained constantly. This is a real reality not a small chance. If they retrieve but hold off on transfer, please know it is the safest best option. FET cycles statistically have the same transfer success. It's just a downer for you, I understand but may be the safest option.

I would also have the same issue. Do you have more than 8 total and there are 8 that are the size they are looking for? In my situation, I had a ton of follicles and my E2 would be high so they would trigger the shot however, it appeared most follicles were not mature at retrieval. I found a Dr who worked with much success for this and he would do a "coast" which meant that I would stop the shots but not do the HCG for a day or two after which would let the follicles mature and me not go into hyperstimulation. There isn't much you can do at this point but put it into God's hand. I wish you much success!! If you find you need further information, do not hesitate to contact me. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

Hi E.!
I had some minor OHSS with my IVF cycle. (I ended up pregnant with twins which is probably why I had it.) I was monitored closely and drank Gatorade by the gallons. From what I remember of my cycle, if my E2 levels were too high they would have cancelled the cycle and not gone through with the retrival process. However, since they have already triggered you I would assume they feel comfortable with your levels. Also, you could always do a FET if they feel your body isn't ready this cycle or transfer. Whichever way you have to go I wish you the very best of luck!!!!!

Hi, I have been through 4 IVFs and I have had OHSS with two. The two that I had it were actually successful cycles and I have 2 great, healthy kids from them. The other 2 cycles I became pregnant, but then miscarried. The first time I had OHSS it was more extreme and I was hospitalized and went through the draining process and IV albumin treatment. The second time I had OHSS, I was closely monitored but was not hospitalized. I remember that I had to drink plenty of gatorade, weigh myself daily, and eat lot of protein. I know that OHSS is scary but if you have a doctor willing to go with this cycle and monitor you closely you should be ok. OHSS was not the worst thing I have ever experienced and it was totally worth it for my kids. Best of luck to you with everything, S.

Hi E. - I have not yet been through this myself, but am planning a summer IVF cycle, so I have been spending a little time on some of the online communities/message boards that deal with IVF. I definitely suggest you become a member on one or both from which I've found a ton of information and very knowledgeable, experienced women! They are: sheknows.com (click on Trying to Conceive Clubs, then go to IVF) and fertilitycommunity.com (again, find IVF thread). Good luck - I wish you success this cycle and a relatively easy go of it! I know it can be complicated but the thing that is getting me through the stressful thoughts and anticipation is knowing that it has worked for many and has gone well for many!
