Hyperemesis Gravidarum?

Have you heard of this before Kate Middleton was diagnosed with it? I have not heard of it before and I read all kinds of books while pregnant. I do not recall one book even mentioning it. Holly Madison is now diagnosed with it too.

I copied this about the condition: Her condition only affects a slim margin of expectant mothers (1 percent or less) and is marked by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, dehydration, light-headed, and fainting.

I had morning sickness or I should say all day sickness and it was not fun so I cannot imagine having this condition. Sounds so horrible! I guess I have been in a bubble or in my own world for not hearing of this before now? My heart feels for them!

What can I do next?

Yes, I had heard of it before. Until about the 1950s it killed more women and babies than we now realize; society has forgotten that it exists and is so serious. It bugged me greatly when people snarked (even here on Mamapedia) that they would have looooved some bed rest in a hospital for mere morning sickness. This is much worse and can be fatal. It's not often heard of now because it's much more treatable than in the days when it killed more people.

I had it with my last pregnancy. It was the most horrible thing I had ever experienced. I had a nurse that came every day to hook me up to an IV so that I didn't die and didn't lose the baby. I easily vomited 50-75 times a day.

Yes, I'd heard of it. It was in What to Expect When You're Expecting. I'm sure you have that one on your shelf.

I had it with my second. Early on i was in the clinic or hospital every other day for IVs. Then a nurse would come to my house and give me IVs. Then i had my own lines that id hook up IVs too. I could barely function. I took zofran to help but it didn't stop the vommitting....slowed it a bit maybe. It was horrible, i didn't know it was possible to be so sick. 7 years later i had another (crazy) but i just had normal morning sickness still a little worse than most but i wouldn't complain after what i went through with my second!!

Yes, I had this awful awful condition with 2 out of 4 pregnancies but my last one was the worst of the 2. I had it so bad that I was hospitalized several times for days at a time and nearly lost my baby boy because of it & among other reasons during the pregnancy as well but he was my strong little dragon and he went against all odds. I couldn't keep anything down at all. I was scared through the whole pregnancy because of it. I was on Zofran daily. This is a very real & serious pregnancy condition and unless someone has been through it, they have no idea what complications it consists and how extremely difficult it was to deal with. Us that have endured it wished it was so simple as morning sickness for a couple of months, I had it 8 out of the 9 months. Today I have a beautiful healthy baby boy that is the light of my life & heart!

I had a co-worker who had it with her first pregnancy. She was hospitalized a couple of times, a nurse had to come out to her house and give her an I.V. once, and the medicine that she was given was outrageously expensive.
No problems with her 2nd one though.

Yup heard of it. It effects closer to 5%. It's uncommon, but I wouldn't say highly rare like the media was playing it up. I know of a few people who had (would end up in the hospital with IVs and a zofran pump). I was actually pretty close to it, too. When I was pregnant with my girl, I didn't realize what I had was beyond normal pregnancy sickness. I couldn't keep water down. I showed up at my OB appointment and the doctor was flipping out, got me on an IV and everything. Luckily, I responded to oral zofran and didn't need the pump.

I was "borderline" according to my docs. It was hell, I'm not even kidding. I NEVER EVER want to be pregnant again. I couldn't work, I could hardly get out of bed. I had to keep buckets, because I would faint trying to get to the bathroom. I was in the hospital for IV fluids too many times to count. I couldn't even keep water down much of the time. My throat was raw, my stomach lining was messed up. I don't even want to think about what a full blown case would be like.

I had it with both pregnancies, along with other complications. After my first pregnancy, my doctor told me not to risk another pregnancy. We honestly didn't think I could get pregnant, but I got an IUD just to be sure. Six years later I had the IUD removed because of problems with that and I was pregnant a month later. I was in and out of the hospital throughout both pregnancies, and was still throwing up on the delivery table. I was on bed-rest for several months with each pregnancy, and delivered both babies early (one 5 weeks early, and one 4 weeks early). Both boys were healthy, and I am extremely thankful for them, but I'm also thrilled to have my tubes tied now. :)

I had this with all four of my children and each tine it got worse! I was hospitalized with three of them and my last one was horrible. I had the nurses, IV therapy, and continuous Zofran therapy and this lasted until I was about 7 months along. I feel sorry for Kate and anyone else who goes through this, the only positive thing is the beautiful baby at the end.

I had it with my second and it was the first time I'd ever heard of it. I was MISERABLE! I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
