Husbands Birthday 35--Any Ideas

My husband will be 35 on Thursday. He spent his 30th in Iraq and so we had a combo welcome home/30th/31st party, so would like to recognize his birthday this year with "something" special. he is an auto/jack of all trades/hunter who likes to spend money and therefore has most of the gadgets he needs. I have been out of work for a few months d/t a layoff and had been the primary source of income before that, so we are trying to sell our house etc and so money is an issue with this event. Long story short, I am not that creative and so far have planned to have some friends over and make his favorite cake into cupcakes spelling out "35". I have seen such creative ideas here that I thought I'd see if anyone has a suggestion. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Have your guests bring him inexpensive gifts in quantities of 35. 35 beers, or whatever his favorite drink is. 35 shotgun shells, 35 whatever is fitting for him.

Hi B.,
First of all, a BIG THANK YOU to you and your husband for serving our country (I feel you did too as you had to worry and wait for him to come back).

Ok, sort of a goofy idea here, but depending on your husband, it may be a good one -- or not! Anyway, is your husband a gun or bow hunter? My husband is a "personality" in the hunting industry (bow hunting). It is strange to me, but some people (mostly men) are "fans" of my husband and some of our other friends -- if your husband is a bow-hunter, he may be one of these such people. :-) If so, I could arrange for my husband and possibly others to give him a call for his birthday. I only mention this as you said money is tight and it would be free and possibly something he would enjoy if he is a fan. :-) If he does not bow-hunt, I'm pretty sure he would not be interested.

Another idea is that it is Turkey hunting season -- so maybe you could call around for a place to take him hunting for the day? Turkey hunting is my personal favorite -- the weather is good and it's pretty fun as I find the birds facinating (and beautiful, and well, uh, tasty too ;-) ). If you "plead your case" to some local land owners, they might be able to recommend a good spot with lots of Turkey and give you permission to hunt. If your husband is a hunter, I can GUARANTEE he would LOVE this -- and once again, other than your time, it only costs the price of the Turkey Tag.
Good luck and Happy Birthday to your hubby!!

Angie

P.S.: In my experience, a man *never* has all the gagets he needs, lol!

I once ordered a basic bouquet from our local florist, picked up a whole bunch of $5 giftcards for places he likes - home Depot; Menards; Gander Mountain; etc - and then went to the florist and had them put them on the plastic card holder things in the bouquet and they delivered the flowers to him that way. Was fun, he never expected soemthing liek that; and not too spendy as I only got $5 cards at the various stores.

I think it would be a great idea to list 35 things you love about your husband. If you have kids, they can help with the things they love about their dad. It doesn't cost any money and would be really special.

Send out an e-mail telling everyone to give him a call and the #. I know some resturants have free b-day meals. If friends want to join you tell them to stop by and the hours that you will be there. But I don't think that you should feel obligated to buy there drinks or meal. They probably know that situation.
Make or order pizza(if you do frozen pizza you can put it in as needed) and have everyone over. chips and veggie. Bring your own beverage. So he doesn't find out. When there is stacks of food all over.

Make him a coupon book of 35 different items. For example:
Breakfast in bed
Foot massage
Date night
You can kind of get the idea. You can make the coupon book contain both some low cost ideas and some free ideas.
