Husband's Snoring

My husband has been snoring for the past five years, but he only snores when he is on his back or left side. Over the years it has gotten louder and louder and for the the past week or so he is now snoring on his right side so no matter how he sleeps he snores. His snoring is waking me up at least 6-7 times a night which is causing me to be exhausted during the day. I really don't want to have to go sleep in the guest room bed every night and was wondering if anyone has tried anything that has either helped them or their spouse to stop snoring. I have heard about those Breathe Right strips and was curious if they really work. Please help!! :-)

A good poke in the ribs help. =) Actually I have taken my finger and gentley closed one nostril, it interrupts their breathing enough to make them roll over and usually stops the snoring for a little bit. Hehe!
You get used to it and after a while you won't be able to sleep without it! If it is that bad get earplugs.
I would rather sleep with a snorer than alone any day!

Hi L.-

I have the same problem with my husband and it's so frustrating for us. He never even feels me nudge him to roll over. He uses breathe right strips as well as a nasal decongestant for the bad nights. I'd say they work about 90% of the time. Some nights nothing helps.

Good luck!

Hi L.:

My husband uses Breathe Right strips and they help. They don't eliminate all the snoring but definitely makes a difference.

The Breath Right strips help, but only if they stay on the nose. They have stayed on mine because my skin is really dry. My husband has oily skin and sweats alot in his sleep, so after a few turns in his sleep it falls off and sticks to something else. We usually find it stuck to the pillow case, sheets, pjs or floor. They do work really well though.

HAHAHAHA! Girl I feel your pain! I can't stop laughing b/c I am experiencing the same drama.
We have those breathe right strips. Yes, they help a little bit. The menthol are key though if you are going to attempt to use them First off the menthol helps to clear out the airway, but also they are made of a stretchy band aid material where as the other clear non-menthol strips are a thick plastic material that doesn't bend and grip as well.
BUT! If he falls asleep on his back-it brings the volume down only slightly. Then you'll find he'll find another way to snore and annoy. There is in lack of snoring black bear there is a wheezy tweety bird sound.
He's really kind to me about trying to sleep on his side, but it's uncomfortable for him. so when he is really going at it I nudge his leg with my toe.
I mean the extreme would be seeing a specialist for maybe a deviated septum.
the other, him letting you fall asleep first with a nice glass of wine. :) good luck! sleep tight

My husband snore so loud, he is overweight so I think it makes it worse......the thing that quiets him is the humidifier. It helps all of us get some sleep, its worth a try.

Have you thought about getting a white noise machine? There are all kinds available, but honestly, what works for me is this small air purifier you can find at Wal-Mart for about $13.00! It makes the perfect muffler for a snoring husband's noise. They are also great for infants or kids to block out household noises so they will sleep better. I tell every new mom I meet or any one who sleeps with a snorer!

Hope this helps - I sympathize with you!

Let me just say, I feel for you! If you don't want to resort to laser surgery than a few things that seem to help. Buy a king sized bed if you don't already have one, puts you a little further away from the noise. Get a box fan and place it on the floor next to your side of the bed. And last but not least, try to get to sleep before he does. We actually go to bed at different times so I can fall asleep first. Good Luck!!!

Like another post said, the Breathe RIght strips may not stop it completely, but they certainly do help! My husband snores when his allergies are bad, or when he's sick. When he doesn't use Breathe Right strips, I'm waking him up several times each night asking him to change position to try to stop the snoring. When he does use the strips, he either doesn't snore, or it's more like heavy breathing. I also used these when I was pregnant, since I was snoring like a chainsaw towards the end. They helped my husband get his sleep during those last couple of months! You don't realize how much easier it is to breathe with these until you try them.

Sweet dreams!

I wear ear plugs to bed... that way you don't have to inconvenience him. Plus, the breathe-right strips did not help us out. I've bought the little foam ear plugs from walgreens... they work great! i'd try them :)

My Stepmom uses the Breathe Right strips and they've helped her out significantly. My Dad would agree!! I also have a friend that was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea after trying a million different "fix its" for his snoring. I'd say that if the strips don't work, see a doctor. Hope this helps.

My husband was a terrible snorer. We've tried the following with some success: Breathe Right Throat Spray, Strips, a nasal decongestant before bed, homeopathic pills and sprays from Merz Apothecary. He eventually went through a sleep study to see if he had sleep apnea. In the end he got surgery (out-patient at Northwestern) to correct a deviated septum and he barely snores now. He also lost weight to bring him back within a "healthy" recommended BMI. It's all made a huge difference. Good luck!

In more cases than not, people who snore have a sleep disorder called Sleep Apnea..in severe cases of apnea, you stop breathing in your sleep, and your brain jerks you awake to resume breathing. This may be a case of mild apnea your hubby has. I would tell him to talk to his doctor. My hubby snored insanely, and the doc sent him for a sleep study, sure enough he had severe apnea. Its caused by an obstruction in your breathing. I also have it, but i never snored, i just was constnatly tired for no reason, turns out it was cuz i was waking up to resume breathing and didnt know it. There is surgery to fix it, but also a machine with a mask you can wear when you sleep. Again, this may not be the reason for his snoring, but its something to consider and talk to the doc about. If he seems tired early in the day or throughout the day, id say the chances are thats what the prob is..but im not a doc, so dont swear by it.

hope this helps.

I'm really late responding to this, but your hubby may still be snoring, so this is still applicable. (ha ha)

One very easy way to fix this is by getting a mouthpiece from your dentist. I have made about a dozen and all my patients (and wives) LOVE it. And I do too, incidently, I made one for my husband. They are called SilentNite appliances and almost any dentist can do it, although many do not. It takes 2- 15 minute appointments, and sometimes is covered by your insurance. Just for reference--it costs about $350 at my office--please don't get suckered into paying $2500 by a "specialist" for the same thing. You wouldn't believe the people who don't get what they need because they don't know how accessible it is--or pay way too much. I read an article in the Tribune about a man who discovered the greatest thing since sliced bread, flew to NY to the "only dentist who did them", and paid $3500. The article had a picture of him with the same thing I just made for my husband. It's completely portable, easy to travel with, and requires no power source (like a CPAP)

One last story--our good friend and dd's godfather, snores to wake the dead. I am a heavy sleeper and he can wake me from another room!! I don't know how his wife deals with it. Anyway, I finally convinced him to try it a year ago--and he loves it!! The first week his wife woke up in a panic to see if he was still alive because she couldn't hear him anymore!
Call my office and speak to me or Michael if you need more info. ###-###-####

Don't know how close you are to Naperville, but there is a Dentist who has a web site called: tiredofsnoring.com
It is a device that he puts in his mouthe that opens up the air ways. He would get a better night sleep along with you. It isn't like the CPAP machine either. It is just an appliance that goes in the mouth like a retainer. I believe it can be covered by some insurances.
The Dentists name is Dr Wyneth. May as well look into it anyway. I know nothing about those strips. Iknow that if you have to keep buying them your entire marriage, the appliance would most likely be less expensive.

Do me a favor and if you contact him, let me know. I give these sorts of suggestions to gal in the MAMA Group and I never know if they come to fruition. Thanks D. V

Hi, this seems like a lot of people have this issue! My husband used to snore every night! He snores less if he hasn't eaten wheat and dairy products. Those seem to cause congestion and make the problem worse. I have to nudge my husband, sometimes several times in the night, and sometimes he scares me out my sleep with a huge snore!
I would hate to get him to go to the doc for this, he's had severe intestinal health problems all this past year, and 3 surgeries between the end of June, and the middle of September!
Hope you find a solution. Dietary changes could help.

you should use earplugs. i know several people who use them for snoring spouses. you can get them at the drug store, they are puffy and about 1/2" long. you squeeze them, insert them and then they expand. they are great. i wear them on the weekends so my husband gets up with our toddler and i can sleep in (otherwise i hear her and it wakes me up). good luck!

My husband was also a snorer. He went to an ENT and found after a sleep study that he has sleep apnea. He started with a CPAP machine and then elected to have surgery to correct the problem. We are both able to sleep much better at night. I would suggest he consider making an appointment to make sure he doesn't have sleep apnea. It can lead to serious illness (high blood pressure and heart disease). I'm not sure where you live, but his doctor is Dr. Michael Friedman at Illinois Masonic in Chicago. He is a leading on authority on sleep apnea. Good luck!

My husband was a horrible snorer too. Turns out he had a deviated septum. He had surgery to repair it and is much better. He still snores on occasion, but it is due more to a)having a cold, b) low humidity in the house, or c) extremely tired.

I would recommend seeing an MD to rule out deviated septum and/or sleep apnea before trying any OTC remedies.

Hi L.,

It sounds like your husbands snoring is annoying you.
Have you talked to him about it?

I suggest that you set up a time, when you can speak to him
without interruption, and without anything that will distract you (kids, tv, etc.) and discuss this problem.

Each of you should come up with a couple of solutions, then
choose one and see if it works.

Nose strips might be one solution. Seeing an MD is another one. Sleeping in different rooms is another solution.

But this is a social problem between you, not just a physiological condition that your husband has. His snoring is keeping you awake.

It needs to change.

Good Luck!

My mother uses the Breathe Right Strips and it helps out A LOT!!! She takes them with her when she goes on vacation to Texas to see family. Family has told her she needs them because she wakes people up in the middle of the night down the hall. So she has used them ever since and everyone in her house sleeps better.

I STRONGLY recommend that you get your husband in to see his doctor and ask about a sleep study. Snoring can be suggestive of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can have very severe long-term consequences on his health. The doc will also check his air passages to make sure there's not some obstruction or other causes for his snoring. Good luck.

I feel for you as I had the same problem. The bottom line is I put in ear plugs and it works (unless he goes into a hugely loud snore). Your husband can also try the Breath Rite strips which work for some people. The nice part about the ear plugs is my husband ends up getting up with our son since I don't hear the cries...so I get even more sleeep!

Hi there-

My husband uses Snore Stop and while it doesn't "stop" it, it does quiet it considerably. Hope this helps. I know all too well how much this stinks!

Good luck and if you find something that works, please let us all know. :)
