Hunger Strike?

I think my 10 month old son is on a hunger strike? He is not interested in eating foods or nursing as long as he use to. For the last 2 days he is nursing less- like not even emptying one breast compared to nursing on both. As well as is eating less for his meals. He will eat some finger foods I give him but not really interested in me spoon feeding him. Not sure what is going on. He is still sleeping well and a happy, playful baby but just not eating much. I know he will not starve himself but I am starting to worry a little. We are moving the end of this week and so has been a little stressful for me- not sure if he can sense that or not. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Sounds pretty normal to me. At about 9 1/2 mo. my daughter decided she wanted to feed herself... but it took us a week to catch on we just thought she was refusing to eat... then she ate pretty good for a month then her appitite dwindled... she is 11/1/2 mo now and eats half my plate all of a sudden... I think they just go in phases like that. He'll eat if he is hungry. Don't push him. Continue to offer a selection of food choices... at least 3... and you might even try including them from what you are eating as well. My daughter doesn't eat what we aren't eating. His appitite will improve. Here pretty soon he'll start getting the bulk of his calories from food rather than breat milk anyway so you should expect to see a decline in feeding... just not a stop all together.

Probably teething or possibly starting to show his independence by wanting to feed himself!! My 14 mo. old is cutting 4 teeth right now and won't eat anything at some meals. Try soft things like applesauce or yogurt or try showing him how to hold the spoon and see if he is more interested in the food that way. It's a huge mess, but a little food in is better than none.

I don't have any ideas other than teething, but I know how hard it is when they aren't nursing as much as usual. I would just pump what he doesn't eat so you continue to make enough milk. That's one thing I worry about when my daughter doesn't empty both breasts. Good luck!

Kids go back and forth with that for a long time. I know when I was little, mom thought I'd never eat. As long as the child is getting water..I promise, they are going to be ok. They will eat when they get hungry. My daughter did this as well. My nephew is doing it right now, my sister gives him pediasure. That makes her feel better...Good Luck and don't panic. This is a very normal phase and will most likely happen again.

It could be a combination of things. He might be able to sense your stress, he might be teething and he might be getting ready to hit a growth spurt. My son is 2 and there are days he hardly eats.
I know it is hard not to worry, but if he is still happy than try not to.
Just make sure you continue to offer him food. If it is still going on after a couple of days, go ahead and call the doc. I am sure he is just fine. :)

Have you checked to see if he's teething? I would guess that would be cause #1.

When my baby was 9 mo. old, he had ear infections in both ears and refused to eat anything except what was on my plate. So, I fed him my food in smaller portions. He loved it and refused to go back to baby food of any kind or let me feed him for the most part! My pediatrician said this was great and perfectly normal. Maybe he just wants to feed himself grown up food. He has also weaned himself down to a small nursing every night and a good one in the morning. I have used Similac Next Step which is a formula that gets babies ready for cow's milk so it's not so thick or hard to swallow. Babies do also just go through phases. Breathe deep and relax :)
