I don't have my own business but I have a really impressive marketing background so here goes my years of experience in one short posting. If your children are in school go to the PTA meetings, ice-cream socials, etc. Chat up everyone at these events and talk about your product. Word of mouth is the best advertising tool in the industry. Check your local newspapers, in New York we have what's called a penny saver and it advertises local businesses, it's inexpensive and really get's around. Not sure what your line of business is but are you willing to give some up has a promotion for winning a contest, or has a tester product? Anything free always get's people's attention. Check the local barber and beauty shop maybe you can barter with them to adverstise your product and you advertise their salon on your site, etc. Print up colorful flyers post them in the local grocery store, post office, gas station. Most people standing on line or pumping gas will always look for something to read and your colorful flyer will catch their attention. Good luck!

This halloween, have samples with your business card attached (and a candy attached too of course, yumm!) Give to parents that come trick-or-treating with their kids.

Word of mouth - give your friends pamphlets or incentives like "25% off your next order for every customer you send my way"

Are you a photographer?
For my halloween thing idea - get a cheapo little camera charm if you can find one (Oriental Trading company?) and attach
- candy
- camera charm
- business card with "25% off your first photo shoot" or something

Smile at parents and talk about how you photograph children especially, talk about Thanksgiving or Christmas coming up. Perhaps your coupon could say "25% off your Fall/Holiday photo shoot".
And have really good candy - snickers, Reeces PB cups, Almond Joy.

Also, if you ARE selling photography, make calendars and mugs and such with your photos on it. Give to friends for gifts. Make sure your advertisement is also on the mug. So when I see your friend using her beautiful travel mug I can say "Where'd you get that?" and she'll tell me that you took the picture and made it into a mug for her.

Go to http://www.meetup.com, its free. You put in your zip and search "business networking" and groups will come up. Some are free, some have fees, but you can attend the "meetup" to meet other people who may be willing to send you business after they get to know you. If there aren't any in your area, you can start your own group for about $12 per month and have other people join. I have 3 groups on meetup and go to several others. Let me know if you want more info. Good luck!

Referrals are always the best. Do you have any non-kiddo time in the mornings or at lunch? If yes, go to linkedin.com and type in your zipcode and the subject "business networking". There are groups all over the Dallas Metroplex that meet for the sole purpose of building their businesses. Some cost a lot, some are free, most have a minor membership cost plus the cost of food wherever they meet. Each group has its own personality, so you should visit at least 2x before joining anything. Some are exclusive - 1 business type per category, some allow a few in 1 category, some are completely open (like Chambers of Commerce).

Feel free to PM me if you want to pick my brain about this. :) Good luck!

It depends on what kind of business you have. We are in the raw materials industry and we do no advertising at all, everything is work of mouth and my husband is well respected in this industry as far as knowing the ins and outs of the plastics.

That said.... who is your target audience? What are your price points?

Our HOA has a website and you can advertise on it very reasonably. Many schoold publish a directory and sell advertising. Our booster clubs at the Sr high level school publishes the sports program that is sold at football, basketball, etc games. It is FULL of advertising from all types of vendors... insurance, medical, dental, food, restaurants, salons, etc.

Without knowing you business it is hard to steer you in a good direction but maybe this helped a little.
