How Warm You Keep Your House on Winter?

I am trying to save money so I keep the house at 69 at night, we all sleep with pajamas and have flannel sheets.
During the day however 68 for us is too cold, specially because we live in a 2 level home and all the heat arise and leaves the first floor cold so we put it to 71 and wear socks.
My MIL per example doesn't go any where below the 72-74, but my mother house is like a ice cube around 66 on winter
Curious to see where do my family stand on the cold/warm side.
I can wait to be warm enough to don't need heat or a/c and just open the windows! So much fresh and cheap!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ha, I thought we were on the cold side. I guess coming from my MIL's home 68-69 is cold, she is old, had bad circulation and retired ( she spend most of her time sitting down) she needs the house warmer I guess and we got spoiled I guess. I think we need to detox slowwwly :8)

68, but it's been overall warmer this summer here in Maryland.

I keep it cold in the summer and deal with the bills.

It's at 70 now AND I've got the fireplace on. I could go get some socks, but I don't prefer them...so the fireplace will do :).

I usually keep my home at 69-70 but, Im in mobile home and have oil heat so it can get quite expensive for us. I put plastic on all the windows. I have a space heater in the living room as that is where we are always at. This year due to the much higher cost I have it set at 67 day and night. I dont believe is dropping the temp at night. I dont believe it saves any since it has to run just as long to warm everything back up.

We keep it where ever we are most comfortable.

I think it usually stays on 72 24/7.

I can't stand to be uncomfortable in my own home so we change temps as needed. We do the same in the summer with AC. We stay comfortable.

I am in MN, but we have had a very odd winter here! But we are still sticking with normal. We have a programable thermostat.

66* daytime. Any more and we are roasting. We wear sweatshirts and sock or slippers. At night, we HAD it set for 58*, but both myself and my teenage daughter were opening the bedroom windows all night, so hubby was turning the heat totally off. At night thats great, but makes for a COLD floor in the morning! So I adjusted the thermostat to go to 48* at night so the heat should not kick on and we can still open our bedroom windows.

We are "cold hardy" I suppose. I would absolutely NOT be able to sleep in homes as warm as most people at night! My poor daughter is going to likely have room mate issues when she goes off to college next year (unless she lives at home and goes to the one school option in-state!)

We have newer windows and doors and tons of extra insulation. In the summer we have our central air on from late spring all thru till fall. We like COLD! LOL.

By the way, our bills this winter have been the lowest ever!

we have ours set to 70. We have a 4 story town home and so the first level is freezing, but we have blankets down there and we are fine. The top level is the master bedroom and it's like an oven up there. We open the windows (even when it's 30 degrees out) up there and it's still warm in that room. Summer we keep it around 72-74

We use fans to move the warmer air to where we need it. We also use space heaters that heat an individual room if we need that room warmer. The whole unit doesn't need to be in use if we really are in one room that is cooler.

We sleep warmer at night. I like being able to get up and go pee without shivering. I can put on more clothes during the day and move around to help stay warmer. Plus we are awake more hours than asleep.

I have my thermostat between 68 and 72 during the day, depending on how chilli I feel, how rigorous I clean and it probably also depends a bit how cold it is outside. At night we have the temp go all the way down to 64, which is comfortable when you wear pyjamas and are under the blanket.

I have noticed, we do not notice we are cold in our home until it reaches 57.. And so 58 is what we started setting the heat to.

We try not to complain about rain or the cold, because in the summers when it is over 100 most days, and no rain for months, we feel we must enjoy the rain and cold it as much as possible.

2 story home with cold winters........I change it all day long! At night is 68, when I get up in the morning, I bump it up to 72 - I think the extra warmth helps when everyone has to get out of their snuggly beds! Then kids go to school and hubby takes off for work. I work at home and am the only one here - I put it back to 68 for the day. Then in the evening, after dinner and homework and baths, I put it back to 72 for a few hours while we snuggle, play games, read books and get ready for bed, then back down to 68 before I tuck myself in!

If you are too cold at 68 you are not wearing enough clothes.

Anything above 72 is uncomfortable.

We keep the daytime temp set around 67 or 68. We have a 1 level home (no basement) but all the floors (except for the actual bedrooms) are limestone. So they stay pretty cool. We all wear socks or house slippers inside. (hubby doesn't but he doesn't feel cold...).

At night, we turn it down to around 65? Of course, where we live it doesn't get that cold anyway... but that doesn't really matter to your question. The inside temperature is the inside temperature based on the thermostat... has nothing to do with how often/long it runs to get it there.

In summer (deep south here, and very high humidity, so high 90's all summer with overnight lows in the 70-80's) we keep the a/c set to around 77 or 78. I might turn it down to 76 overnight. And we run ceiling fans in all the bedrooms at night.

As I sit here typing, I have on flannel PJs, flannel robe, bedroom slippers and sitting with a fleece blanket. But when I get up and am doing things around the house I warm up a bit. Sitting and not moving makes you feel colder because your blood isn't circulating as well. If your MIL is older or more sedentary, then that is more likely the reason she keeps the temp set a little higher. Or maybe your own mom is more conscious of her heating bill. ?

Every year we put up plastic on the window. The ones that really leak or we don't use on a regular basis to look out we put plastic on the outside also.

Go around each room and feel on the floor for drafts, if you feel some then pull the the base boards and fill the cracks with the expandable foam. Let dry for 24 hours before putting the baseboards back on. Becareful that stuff is STICKY and make sure you wear rubber gloves, it took me 2-3 days to get that stuff off!

Check the doors, if air is coming in under the doors buy the things that go under the door to block the air. If its coming in on the sides of the door, buy the foam strips ( in the weather proofing isle) they come in 1/4 in or 1/2 in and is foam on one side and sticky on the other and put it along the door frame all the way around.

We have an old rock foundation and even with the heater in the basement its cold down there. We bought rolls of insulation and stapled them to the floor ( first level floor, basement "ceiling") inbetween the studs. It kept the cold air from hitting the first level floor so it wasn't as cold.

In our kitchen, its the coldest room in the house. We do put an upright space heater that osculates to help that room.

We don't have heat vents upstairs, just one air vent ( more or less a hole in the floor that is "suppose" to heat 4 rooms) needless to say its cold up there. We just throw on extra blankets and when it gets really cold out we turn on space heaters.

We have our heat set at 66 during the day and 60 at night. Its chilly in here all the time, but you get use to it. Some days we do have to turn it up as its freezing in here. But we all wear layers. warm pj bottoms, t shirt, sweatshirt, socks and slippers. Sometimes we even have to throw on a blanket watching tv.

But the little insulating things will make a huge difference!

we have a pellet stove in the living room which is set at 74f, while the house heater (oil) for downstairs during the day is set at 68. the pellet stove heats the kitchen and the living room to 74f. during the night the pellet stove doesn't help us bc all bedrooms are upstairs, so it gets shut off, while the upstairs at night is set at 75f but it only heats it to 70-71f. my kids and i are always cold, we all sleep in fleece pjs but still we are cold. so yes, my husband is a walking talking complainer during the winter. but we ignore him.

I grew up COLD and I am a small person so I prefer my house a little more cozy when we can afford it. We like to have it around 70 in the daytime and around 67 at night when everybody has blankets. I work from home and DD is here with me, so it's warmer than it used to be. In the summer we just take the edge off. I'm fine at 80 with low humidity but the rest of the family likes it more like 75-78.

We have colder/warmer rooms so some of us are warmer than others. I'd have to see what our digital thermostat is set on. If you don't have one, consider a digital thermostat. It keeps the house more even, IMO.

We have a cold basement rec room and when someone is down there a long time and is cold, they can put on the gas fireplace.

We also open curtains to let the sun in so the heater isn't running full all day.

Friends of my mom's had the house so hot in winter they wore shorts and so cold in summer they wore long pants! I never understood that.

We live in a pretty moderate area climate wise I suppose. It gets hot in summer (but not like it did in TX!) but it's also not as cold as TX got either! In summer, the temp inside is 79 in the day, 77 at night. In the winter, we keep it about 65-67 in the day (basically, I just turn the heat off) and at night we have it on 70 because we have found that we have weird dreams if we're cold.

We have a 2 story as well, and the upstairs is always substantially warmer than the downstairs. Also, I'm one of those "always cold" people.

At night, we keep it at 68. During the day, I work in my office downstairs and usually keep it around 71. But then if I have to go do something upstairs, it's hot! Sometimes I'll just run a space heater in my office instead.

But it's much improved after installing good insulated windows last year. Before that it was always drafty!

At night I keep the house at 66 and during the day if we are home it is 68. Sometimes it can be a little chilly so we go up to 70, but never higher than that. Also we are not home all day during the week, so I keep the house at 60 and have it set to kick on 30 min before we get home so it is usually about 65 when we get home.

My kids are used to wearing layers in the house. Sorry but we are cheap, and that is why they make sweats, right? :)

I could not imagine setting it any lower! I'd be miserable as would the rest of the house.
