We always kept the computer in the kitchen/family room where I could fully see what they were looking at, and they never had personal computers or other devices in their rooms or on their persons until they were teenagers and understood internet safety.
So yeah, my idea is called "being a parent."

Well, if you feel your kid(s) are spending too much time 'connected' you can do the following:

Step number one - take away devices that connect to the internet as soon as homework is finished.
Step number two - insert devices into a filing cabinet drawer.
Step number three - lock filing cabinet drawer.
Step number four - secure the key in your bedroom overnight.
Step number five - to keep kids occupied without a computer
you can:
hand them a book, or a deck of cards, or send them outside to play.

Wow.
I remember being a kid without the internet.
I remember some tv shows in black and white because we were last house on our block to own a color tv.
I rode my bike all over town.
I built a tree fort when I was 7 yrs old.
I could occupy myself with a sandbox, a few rocks and sticks and a mud puddle.
I read books - a lot - and still do.
When I was 16 there were two major inventions that revolutionized teen hair styles - curling irons and blow dryers.
I lived till my mid twenties without a microwave oven.

I giveth (pay for) the internet (and devices) and it is my right and option to take the internet away if I so desire.
Sometimes to really appreciate the little everyday luxuries - it is a good thing to do without them for awhile.
(And I really loved the NCIS episode when the power was out, the computers/copy machines were down - and Gibbs shows his team how to use a hand cranked mimeograph machine. That episode was BRILLIANT!)

My daughter is 21 and I never blocked anything or used spyware.

We believe in communication and if daughter had been immature and not responsible, then she would not have access to the computer or a cell phone.

BTW.... This posts screams solicitation/survey

I don't mean to be rude but you're asking us what sites our kids frequent (in your next question) and how we monitor their internet time and safety.

that just makes me a bit uncomfortable. I'd feel better if you explained why this is of interest to you.

my child is 5 and has a handful of websites he is allowed to play on. the computer is connected to the big tv in the family room and i can moniter what he is doing. he gets half hour after school to play games online then homework (practicing reading and writing skills, nothing major)after homework is dinner and cleanup then bedtime. so half hour is all he gets.

My daughter is 22 and I never blocked anything but we had discussions about what was appropriate. She didn't get a flip phone until after 6th grade and a smart phone in high school. I'm sure my viewing habits were way worse!

I teach my kids about internet safety, what is and isn't appropriate or legal. I expect them to use what I teach to make good decisions. Just like everything else in life. I also ensure they have enough activities to keep them from spending too much time on the internet.

sorry - I had to read ahead...I am expecting a "new" person to come on and give us a link to some new application....

How do I block? I don't. I talk with my kids about internet and social media.

My kids did NOT get cell phones until they were 10. We have rules. They know the phones are OURS and we are just loaning them to them. It's a privilege NOT A RIGHT.

I didn't let my kid have internet access until she was old enough to understand how to navigate safely. I didn't use blockers or filters. As long as her chores got done, I didn't restrict her use of the computer or other electronic toys.
