I would get two boxes and make one into a lid for the other. Wrap them separately. That way she can pull the top off herself. I just can't imagine a small child lifting a box large enough to hold a man but just the lid, easy as pie.
Hubby comes home from his deployment in a little more than a month (YAY!!!). We've decided to surprise our daughter in a special way! :)
We want him to be wrapped in a large box like a big present for her. Then we will have her open it! hehe
I discovered some large boxes at work today, so thankfully I have that covered!
Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Any tips on how to have the box wrapped, and how to make it easy to get him in & out?
If his plane lands during school hours, we will surprise her at school. So, we'll have to take the box with us, have it pretty much ready to go & hide him in it fairly quickly lol If it's not during school hours, I'm not sure where we will do it.
I do have a truck, so carrying the box won't be a problem!
Thanks for any ideas! :)

I like the cut the bottom of it...wrap it first the cut the bottom and you can just place it over him anywhere you decide to reveal...maybe add some rope to the inside so he can hold down. Cause if she's like me kids it will fall over, since the box itself won't be weighed down by whats in it.
Cut the whole bottom out so you can just slip it over him while he is crouched down.
Thanks, btw, for his service and your family's sacrifice for our country. God bless the USA!
I would have the bottom cut out, and have your hubby just put the box over him. Wrap it with any present wrapping paper, but you'll have to
buy enough to kind of layer it to help cover it all. If you have a Party store in your area, they may have bigger wrapping paper and big bows!
HOW AWESOME that your hubby is coming home! I am SO HAPPY for you all! What an exciting day that will be for you all! Best wishes to you all!
I have wrapped all sorts of things..
It is easiest with 2 people.
Purchase the widest paper you can find. I would purchase 3 to 4 rolls, make sure you can return any unused rolls.
Use regular tape for the paper part, but remember you will need wide packing tape to tape the box closed.
Remember daughter will need to be able to untape at least one side. .. I suggest you leave the bottom portion open.. This way your husband can place the box over his head and even shuffle into place if needed.
Lay the box on its side.. It is easiest on the floor or a drive way. Unroll 2 of the rolls side by side.. Tape them together.. So you have made a wider paper.. If the box is super large, you can tape 3 or 4 rolls together.
Lay the box down on the paper and begin to fold the paper onto the box, just like you would wrap a small gift. You will need packing tape to reinforce your tape.
If you cover the opened bottom portion, just cut that portion of the paper away so your husband can place it over his head.
Add a bow and a big "gift tag".. !
Take lots of photos!
Cut the bottom out of the box. Wrap the whole thing. Tape a big bow on the top/sides using double stick tape. Put the box on TOP of your husband (since the bottom of the box is cut out.) He could walk around with the box on him if need be, then crouch down so the box rests on the floor. Let her open the top of it, or help her just lift the box up off the ground.
Are you ready for her emotions when she sees this? She may be too scared/startled and to surprise her with this in front of her friends, she may not like crying in front of them. I dunno. Just a thought.
Congrats on your husband coming home btw. Very special time.
Thank you to your husband for his service and sacrifices to our country!! CONGRATS on his coming home!!! YAHOO!!!
Our friends did this for their kids (they were 3 and 5) and had the box out on the back deck of the house (they thought it was a new play set) all wrapped up (the bottom of the box was open) and they began to unwrap it and saw that it was a BBQ box...they didn't know WHY they would need a BBQer - mom encouraged them to OPEN IT - they did and Daddy popped out!! YAHOO!!!!
First off thanks for the sacrifices your family makes for all of us. The one thing I thought of was cutting a door in the box before you wrap it. Just wrap around the door and tie it shut with a bow. She then could pull the bow part off or open and the door could be opened to reveal daddy. Good luck and enjoy the time together with your husband home.
My thought was the same as Jo W. actually, and I have to add that I find it slightly hilarious that Laurie has done this already...more than once! ;) I always get a giggle here on Mamapedia! ;)
Anyway, I would do a box and lid, wrap them both separately but in the same paper and put a giant bow on top. It might be hard to find a bow so big right now, but check places like Toys R Us or something that might have a bow big enough to go on a bike...or do car dealerships put bows on cars, maybe you could call one? I always see that in car commercials near Christmas but maybe it's a gimic! Ha!
Anyway, congrats on Hubby returning home and it sounds so fun!
You have some wonderful ideas already. Thanks to your husband for serving America. Thanks to you for serving America by supporting him.
When you cut the bottom out be sure to have handles so your husband can hold on and the escorts can guide it. If you put one washer/dryer box on top of one another , and wrap it, then your husband can lift the top box off when its unwrapped and the bottom box can stay in place.
Of course, if you want to get fancy, make a jeep or tank if he is in the Army, a plane if he is in the Air Force, or a Boat/ship if he is in the Navy, or a jeep or tank if he is in the Marines. Just make sure its narrow enough to get through the class room door.
I wish I could be there to see it happen. Utube has some ideas from others that have done it. I saw one on the nightly news where the wife was "selected" to throw out the first pitch at a semi-pro baseball game. The catcher was her husband. She found out when he brought the ball back to her and took off his catcher's mask.
Good luck to you and yours.
I'd call a home improvement store, and tell them your situation, and ask if they can save a washer/dryer box for you, or whatever size you may need. Everyone loves a service person, I'm sure they'd help you out!! Ask them if they can cut it from the bottom, that way you can just up it over the top of your hubby. Have fun!!
Ok, just reading this made me cry!
Thank you to your husband for serving! Thank you to you for holding down the home front while he was away. You're an amazingly strong woman.
I think it's great that you want to do this for your daughter and I look forward to hearing how it went.
*hugs*
ETA: You've gotten some great suggestions, so I have nothing to add other than then thank yous!
All great ideas! I like the idea of her Daddy popping up from the top best. A handle of some type would have to be on the inside lid so he could hold it as she opens the wrappings. At some point while she unwraps - he could pop out! Therefore a hole would need to be in the bottom for him to get in too. For a bow- just go to hobby lobby and get a roll of anything wide. The wider the better. And make a giant bow. Hold it together with wire or a pipecleaner. Don't forget to video this & put on youtube!
Bring a video camera! I want to see it on the Today Show! ; ) So cool! Enjoy your special reunion!
YAY!!! Thank you to both your husband and your family! A flower shop my be able to make a large bow for you. I was in Hobby Lobby (in Huntsville!) yesterday and they have really wide material over near the ribbon. It can be used to make a large bow (it's not opaque - I noticed lime green and maybe pink - there were probably other colors but I was just passing by it!). Congrats on having your family back together. Thank you for all you've done for our country and to keep my family safe!
Wrap all but the bottom of the box...leave it open. Then, you just place the box on top of him. She can open it but it allows for him to get in it quickly.
if you have a box like a fridge box or a washing machine box it will be great. take one end totally off and have that end wrapped and have her open that end. it will be easiest. I would suggest rather than trying to wrap it with gift wrap that you go to a dollar store and get those big tablecloths they have them made out of both a napkin/paper type material and also plastic. the plastic ones sometimes have things on them like party / etc. congrats on him getting home. my daughter and son in law did this when my son in law came home from Afghanistan. the kids were shocked and so excited. be prepared for tears.
